Optibase debuted its software-only editing package, Media 100 sw, just last month and the application has already been used by Velocite Editorial to cut a television commercial for Chevrolet via advertising agency McCann Erickson Shanghai. Media 100 sw brings the popularity and ease of use of editing in the Media 100 interface to an expanded range of markets and provides a cost-effective companion to customers and facilities using existing Media 100i and Media 100 HD systems.

The spot, entitled "Sweet Dream," airs on television in China. In a first for Chinese automotive advertising, Chevrolet opted for a comedic spot taking a light-hearted look at one man's love of his car to launch the new Epica sedan. Production company Luscious International's renowned comedy director Damien Toogood and producer Tim Berriman shot and edited the spot in Shanghai. John Buck from Australia's Velocite Editorial, who worked with Toogood most recently an award-winning campaign for STA Travel, used an early version of Media 100 sw on an Apple G4 laptop and on an Apple G5 tower to cut "Sweet Dream."

"We took an educated guess on using an early version of the new software ahead of its NAB 2005 debut, but my experience with Media 100 over the past seven years was that the product would be robust and reliable, and it turned out to be just that," said Buck.

"I took the one-light dailies off of a portable DVCam deck and then cut the spot in two solid days of editing in a Shanghai hotel room. Damien and I had a very tight deadline to meet and having the familiar Media 100 interface to rely on seamless, " Buck continued.

After editing, Buck took the EDL generated by Media 100 sw into telecine for final grading, and finally on to a local post-production house for compositing enhancements.

Media 100 sw includes: a full-functioning editing application, with the familiar Media 100 interface; support for all Media 100 codecs; real-time effects, depending on processor and drive speeds; extensive media and graphics import and export capabilities; trial version of Boris Graffiti and the ability to move programs back and forth with Media 100 HD.

The Macintosh-based Media 100 sw software is currently available as a 90-day public beta. A productized version of Media 100 sw, with Firewire deck control and I/O, is expected to be announced in 2005.
