Download: Photoshop Brushes Series 27 20 skin texturing brushes for Adobe Photoshop CS and Elements By Dave Nagel Skin textures are among the most difficult to create when you're working with 3D figures. Unless you have access to one of the more advanced texture creation programs (such as Maxon's BodyPaint 3D) or are satisfied using textures created by others, you don't have a whole lot of options. Fortunately Photoshop's painting tools will allow you--with a bit of effect--to generate skin-like textures, whether you're working with tiles or UV maps. You just need the right set of brushes.

The brushes
Our collection of free brushes this week includes 20 individual brushes, each with unique nibs, for creating skin textures. Some are meant to be used singly, others in combination to produce greater detail--such as cellular patterns, lines, blemishes and the like. Each includes its own set of full dynamics, which can be modified to suit your own needs.

The creation of skin textures can be a bit more time-consuming than, say, hair and fur textures, but the process is a similar one: build up, tear down and create depth to the texture in the process. Generally this involves starting with a dark texture, then switching to a lighter color and painting over it, then going over it a few times in different blending modes. The following examples show some of the textures I created with these brushes using this technique. I'll detail the process more in a forthcoming tutorial.

Download and installation
This week's brush collection is compressed in a Zip archive, which can be decompressed using any Zip utility. (Simply double-click the file in Mac OS X to decompress it.) These brushes support Photoshop CS in Macintosh and Windows environments and will not work in Photoshop 7 or below. They will also be supported by recent versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Once you download the brush file (NagelSeries27.zip), expand it. (The expanded file will be called NagelSeries27.abr.). Then move the .abr file into the Brushes directory in your Photoshop folder (/Adobe Photoshop CS/Presets/Brushes).

Then launch Photoshop. Open your Brushes palette, and click on the flyaway menu at the top right. There you'll find the new brush collection, which you can install simply by selecting it. After you select it, the new brushes will appear at the bottom of the list of available brushes.
