 Apple Sells Better-than-expected 39.3 Million IPhones In Sept Quarter
Apple posted better-than-expected revenue after its best new-iPhone launch on record, pushing sales of the smartphone to 39.27 million in the September quarter. Sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus began in September, helping Apple chalk up a 12.2 percent jump in revenue last quarter to $42.12 billion. That surpassed the roughly 38 million some on Wall Street had expected, and did not include sales in China, its largest market outside of the United States.

Apple had quite a fiscal 2014, introducing the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the Apple Watch and Apple Pay, not to mention its a high-profile acquisition of Beats Electronics. It also put up some impressive financial numbers on Monday, once again beating expectations for its fourth quarter earnings that ended Sept. 28. For the 2014 fiscal year, Apple sold 169.2 million iPhones, 68 million iPads and 18.9 million Macs. Apple's shareholders must be pretty happy about its success. The company's shares are 37.3% higher in the past 12 months, easily outpacing the broader S&P 500 benchmark index, which rose by 8.9%.

Apple released iOS 8.1 today, and with it comes the ability to use Apple Pay on the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. TechCrunch decided to try it out by going to two nearby businesses that already accept Apple’s NFC-powered mobile payments: Walgreens and McDonald’s. Getting the 6 Plus ready for Apple Pay took less than a minute. The Passbook app opened, tapped the “Add” button, selected the Credit/Debit Card menu item introduced in iOs 8.1, and was presented with a form to enter the selected card’s number, expiration date, and security code. There was also an option to scan the details of the card in with the camera.
