Nice Shoes Adds Fourth Telecine Suite

Promotes Colorist Lenny Mastrandrea (November 01, 2004)

In response to rapidly increasing demand for its film transfer services, Nice Shoes has expanded its New York facility, adding a fourth telecine suite equipped with a Spirit Datacine and a Da Vinci 2K color corrector. It also has shared access to the companys recently acquired Grass Valley Specter FS (FilmStream) Virtual Datacine.

To staff the new suite, Nice Shoes has promoted Lenny Mastrandrea to day colorist. Mastrandrea, who has lengthy credits in coloring commercials, has been a night colorist at the post house since 1997.

?Our film-to-tape unit has been booked to capacity, said Nice Shoes managing partner Dominic Pandolfino. ?To accommodate our clients, we have added a new room with the same top tier technology as our other suites and one of the most talented young colorists in the business.


Nice Shoes principal/v.p. of engineering Joe Bottazzi added that the rising demand has in part been fueled by the companys recent acquisition of the Specter, which is routed to each of the companys four telecine suites. ?Specter allows color correction to occur in a non-linear environment and that represents a revolution in post production, especially for commercials, he observed. ?We are very pleased with how well the Specter has been integrated into our facility and thrilled with the response it has received among our clients. Nice Shoes, the only East Coast facility to feature the Specter, has recently used it to post spots for American Express, AT&T, Coke, Fed Ex, Pepsi, Tylenol and Yahoo, among others.

Mastrandreas promotion is representative of Nice Shoes commitment to developing talent from within. The colorist joined the facility shortly after its founding in 1996 as an assistant to colorist Scott Burch. He was promoted to night colorist a short time later and has been steadily honing his skills and developing a personal clientele ever since. The move was a natural transition as Mastrandrea has covered days for Lez Rudge, Scott Burch and Chris Ryan for years and has performed final color correction on spots for such clients as Sony Ericsson, Prilosec, the NFL Network, the Dish Network and Yoplait.

?Lenny has done wonderful work for us for seven years, said Pandolfino. ?Now that we are opening a new room, it was natural to offer him the opportunity to step up. He is talented, knowledgeable and very ?room savvy. He knows how to work with clients and deliver what they are looking for. He is going to shine in his new role.

Colorist Chris Ryan agrees noting, ?Lenny has a great eye for color. Hell make a smooth transition having already worked with many of our clients and will be a great addition to the day crew.

A native of Oceanside, New York, Mastrandrea studied radio and television production at the State University of New York-Cortland. After interning at Post Perfect, New York, he began his career in earnest at SMA Video, where he worked as an assistant to Burch. He came aboard Nice Shoes with Burch as an assistant in 1996 and was promoted to night colorist a year later.
