yU + co Creates Macabre Title Sequence for ?The OthersConsists of intricate pen and ink drawings of a Victorian mansion (September 26, 2001)
Conceived by yU + co creative director Garson Yu, the main title centers on a series of intricate pen and ink drawings of a Victorian mansion. The camera travels slowly around the drawings, which look as though they might be from a childrens book, like the eye of a curious adolescent. Children appear in the drawings, having stories read to them by candlelight or playing with a toy train on the floor.
But as the sequence proceeds, the drawings become subtly more disturbing. Near the end, a drawing appears depicting a puppet dressed as an angel and suspended by strings, its head askew as if dead. The final image returns to an exterior view of the old home that then dissolves into a filmed image and the movie begins.
Yus inspiration for the title stemmed from the films plot which centers on two children who suffer from a rare disease that forces them to avoid sunlight. ?The image I had in mind was that of a child crouched in the corner of a darkened room reading a book by candlight, explains Yu. The progression from innocence to horror depicted in the title sequence mirrors the films tense plot.
In addition to designing the title sequence, yU + co produced it, shooting the various drawings and digitally creating the lighting effects that make it appear as though the drawings are illuminated by candlelight. yU + co also designed the sparsely elegant title graphics.
Credits for yU + co go to Garson Yu, creative director; Benjamin Cuenod , art director; Todd Mesher, Inferno artists; Tim Thompson, producer; Yolanda Santosa, designer.
