iO Film Purchases Nucoda Film Master For 2K DI Work

Signed to do full 2K DI for “The Celestine Prophecy” feature film (July 19, 2004)

iO Film, a technologically advanced, full-service digital film finishing facility specializing in film and video projects from every sector of the entertainment industry, has announced its purchase of a Nucoda Film Master, the PC-based film finishing solution developed by Nucoda. Film Master will become an essential part of iO’s film finishing service, enabling the company to expand its business while at the same time benefiting from major time and cost savings for clients who require Digital Intermediates. Howard Cohen, Managing Partner, iO Film, made the announcement.

Concurrently, Mr Cohen announced that the Company has been retained to do the full 2K Digital Intermediate work for the currently in post-production “The Celestine Prophecy” feature film.

“The Celestine Prophecy” is a feature film adapted from James Redfield’s novel about the search for a sacred manuscript in the Peruvian Rain Forest, and is being directed by Armand Mastroianni. The film is a Barnet Bain Films/Celestine Films/Metafilmics Production. Barnet Bain, Beverly Cambe, Terry Collis, and James Redfield are the producers.

Regarding today’s announcement, Kevin Mullican, CTO, iO Film said, “Film Master has comprehensive feature-sets for ingest, conforming, color correcting and multi format mastering - all on a PC. We will be integrating it into our entire data-centric LAN and SAN-based workflow. It’s an extremely versatile solution and we look forward to making full use of its potential.”

He adds, “Our Company will also be able to perform resolution independent, unlimited layer-based color correction with real-time 2K 10 bit playback and integrated 3D color cube technology. Secondary color correction in Film Master has a powerful user-defined keyer, bezier shapes, sophisticated tracking and the ability to reference external alpha mattes. We will be able to utilise pan & scan, and RGBA compositing tools, then process and export final sequences to our film recorder at any resolution up to 6K.”

Says Mr Cohen, “’The Celestine Prophecy’ movie has many unique color-timing requirements, which makes it an ideal DI project for us. We anticipate that Armand and his director of photography will take full use of the secondary color-correction tools that will be available to them. The movie is being shot in 3-perf Super 35mm. We will be scanning it from flash-to-flash scan rolls. From there, we will conform and color-correct it in Nucoda Film Master, dust-bust, create all the titles, and shoot to 35mm internegative. We will also create the HD masters using the data files from the 2K project.”

“The Celestine Prophecy” saga begins when the lead character, John Woodson, whimsically quits his nondescript life to track down an ancient Peruvian manuscript containing nine insights that supposedly prophesise the modern emergence of New Age spirituality. South of the border, he encounters resistance from the Peruvian government and church authorities, who believe the document will undermine traditional family values. While dodging evil soldiers, paranoid priests and pseudoscientific researchers, Woodson sequentially discovers all nine insights during a series of chance encounters.
