eCinema Systems, a Los Angeles-based innovator of high-definition products for production and post production, is set to debut the industrys first reference-grade, color-calibrated high-definition LCD. Designed for the requirements of HD and digital intermediate (DI) workflows and to enable color grading and critical picture evaluation with color-matched viewing within a facility, across facilities or on set, the new DCM23 display provides professionals with a much-needed HD monitoring platform at a per-unit cost under $16,500 US. The DCM23 will be demonstrated at IBC 2005 at the eCinema Systems booth: Hall 8, Stand 500.

The DCM23 uses patent-pending custom TFT LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) technology with custom modified optics to deliver high performance, reliability and true video frame rates at full native 1920x1080 HD resolution. In another monitoring first, it virtually guarantees identical color fidelity from one DCM23 monitor to other DCM23s.

eCinema Systems will showcase the new DCM23 monitors at IBC 2005, September 9-13, from the eCinema Systems booth, Hall 8, Stand 500. The DCM23 will also be used around the IBC show floor to display leading color management and post-production technologies at the booths of leading editing and DI solutions providers including AJA, Assimilate, Avid, Band Pro Film & Digital, da Vinci, Film & Data Technologies, Root6 Technology and Thomson.

?The monitoring needs of post production and production have become even more robust and specific with high definition and DI, says eCinema Systems company founder Martin Euredjian, a 20-year veteran of telecine engineering, R&D and post production in Hollywood. ?Ive been there in the trenches, so the issues facilities face in having to constantly calibrate and even then still wonder about the final project results were all too familiar to me. With the decline of CRT technology and the rise of collaborative production across geographies, I saw with the launch of eCinema Systems an opportunity to use LCD technology to develop a class of professional reference-grade displays that would take the drudgery and guesswork out of HD monitoring and allow facilities to focus more on completing their work and driving new business.

A wide range of facilities, as well as production professionals such as directors of photography, can use this monitoring solution to communicate, discuss and evaluate color with the knowledge that they are all using and looking at the same calibrated standard. The DCM23 is ideally suited to HD, DI and digital cinematography applications at large facilities and will also allow smaller to mid-sized shops to elevate their capabilities for taking on new types of projects.

It offers a low purchase price for a full-resolution HD monitor, along with low maintenance costs and production-friendly proportions. And, with a 23-inch diagonal view, four-inch width and weight of only 22 pounds, it is also the perfect high-resolution display for production and reference viewing use on set.

Another new important new component for the DCM 23 is eCinema Systems Surround Lighting System, SLS1. The lighting setup in which a monitor is operated is a major factor influencing accuracy and consistency, and this lighting template the first of its kind -- can be used with the DCM23 display to produce the optimum viewing environment out of the box.

?We purchased six eCinema Systems DCM23 monitors based on the performance of the prototype and the great experience with previous eCinema Systems products, says Marker Karahadian, President of Plus8Digital. ?From our initial evaluation, we saw that these screens were being developed by someone who knows what is important in a highly specialized arena. The DCM23 caters specifically to the mission-critical viewing needs of directors, directors of photography, effects artists & colorists. We have seen other HD products and manufacturers spring up and then disappear. An industry-savvy company makes this product and it will adapt with our changing needs. These monitors will be in great demand both on motion picture sets and in post production."
