eBay Announces Winners of eBay Developer Challenge 2006

UnWired Buyer and AuctionContact Take the Honors for Most Innovative Apps (March 07, 2006)
eBay today announced the grand prize and first place winners of the eBay Developer Challenge 2006, which called on members of the eBay Developers Program to submit their most killer and lucrative apps for the chance to win $5,000 and a trip to the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. The grand prize went to Eric Smith for UnWired Buyer, an application that extends the eBay platform beyond the PC by allowing users to track and bid on auction-style listings from their mobile phones.  The first place winner, AuctionContact by Alexander Stankovic, enables affiliates to serve up content-related advertisements for eBay listings on their personal Web sites.

Honorable mentions include: Gumshoo by Craig Villamor, an AJAX application that remixes eBay data to provide a fresh interface to the marketplace; AuctionWatch GD by Ty Kroll, which allows users to watch eBay listings from Google Desktop; and Auction Monitor by Christopher Wong, which allows users to view their My eBay information using RSS, Yahoo! Widgets, and Apple Dashboard.

The eBay Developer Challenge 2006, supported in part by O'Reilly Media, Inc., judged applications on uniqueness and innovation, demo-readiness and suitability for the eBay marketplace. The grand prize winner, UnWired Buyer, received $5,000 cash, round-trip airfare to San Diego, California, five nights accommodation and an invitation to participate in O'Reilly's Emerging Technology Conference.

"We're excited by the level of innovation and ingenuity that all of the entrants demonstrated," said Greg Isaacs, director of the eBay Developers Program. "The eBay Developer Challenge 2006 winners offer buyers and sellers the ability to access the eBay marketplace from wherever they might be, extending the eBay platform in ways previously unimagined. They are all great examples of how innovative developers and affiliates can create viable businesses using eBay Web Services while taking the eBay user experience to a whole new level."

Grand Prize Winner UnWired Buyer allows users to bid on eBay listings using any mobile phone. Three minutes before the close of a listing, UnWired Buyer places a call to the user.  The user is provided with dynamically updated status on an item, including real-time changes in price status. UnWired Buyer users can place new bids or increase previous bids instantly using simple touch-tone commands, allowing buyers to bid on items while away from their computers.

"We continue to turn to eBay because their open approach creates an environment of support for independent developers who are tapping into the platform," said Eric Smith of UnWired Buyer. "In addition to providing business opportunities and a playground for innovation, eBay is a great mentor for developers."

With 181 million registered users of the eBay marketplace, the eBay Developers Program provides an unprecedented global opportunity for developers to expand their businesses and create new channels of revenue.  eBay Web Services is one of the world's most widely used Web services platforms, with 47 percent of all listings on coming in through the Application Programming Interface (API).  In Q4 2005, eBay supported approximately 8 billion API calls.
