The eBay Developer Challenge 2006, supported in part by O'Reilly Media, Inc., judged applications on uniqueness and innovation, demo-readiness and suitability for the eBay marketplace. The grand prize winner, UnWired Buyer, received $5,000 cash, round-trip airfare to San Diego, California, five nights accommodation and an invitation to participate in O'Reilly's Emerging Technology Conference.
"We're excited by the level of innovation and ingenuity that all of the entrants demonstrated," said Greg Isaacs, director of the eBay Developers Program. "The eBay Developer Challenge 2006 winners offer buyers and sellers the ability to access the eBay marketplace from wherever they might be, extending the eBay platform in ways previously unimagined. They are all great examples of how innovative developers and affiliates can create viable businesses using eBay Web Services while taking the eBay user experience to a whole new level."
Grand Prize Winner UnWired Buyer allows users to bid on eBay listings using any mobile phone. Three minutes before the close of a listing, UnWired Buyer places a call to the user. The user is provided with dynamically updated status on an item, including real-time changes in price status. UnWired Buyer users can place new bids or increase previous bids instantly using simple touch-tone commands, allowing buyers to bid on items while away from their computers.
"We continue to turn to eBay because their open approach creates an environment of support for independent developers who are tapping into the platform," said Eric Smith of UnWired Buyer. "In addition to providing business opportunities and a playground for innovation, eBay is a great mentor for developers."
With 181 million registered users of the eBay marketplace, the eBay Developers Program provides an unprecedented global opportunity for developers to expand their businesses and create new channels of revenue. eBay Web Services is one of the world's most widely used Web services platforms, with 47 percent of all listings on eBay.com coming in through the Application Programming Interface (API). In Q4 2005, eBay supported approximately 8 billion API calls.
Founded in 1995, eBay created a powerful platform for the sale of goods and services by a passionate community of individuals and businesses. On any given day, there are millions of items across thousands of categories for sale on eBay. eBay enables trade on a local, national and international basis with customized sites in markets around the world. Through an array of services, such as its payment solution provider PayPal, eBay is enabling global e-commerce for an ever-growing online community.
