ZONA Design Creates Logo and Promos For ?NotoriousNew show launches on The Biography Channel (November 08, 2004)
Having successfully collaborated with The Biography Channel on numerous high-profile projects, the network once again turned to the image makers at ZONA Design, Inc., which created and produced a logo design and a :15 program and promotion package for their new series Notorious which airs every weeknight at 10:00PM on the network. The programming and promotion package began teasing at the end of September for the show that officially launched September 27th on The Biography Channel.
Notorious spotlights criminals and celebrities who earned fame for being infamous - Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss, the ?Teflon Don John Gotti, La Cosa Nostra ?Rat Sammy ?The Bull Gravano, homicidal mother and son grifters Sante and Kenny Kimes, Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVey, former NFL running back and ?trial of the century defendant O.J. Simpson, and the murderous highway prostitute Aileen Wuornos. Notorious provides the viewer with a close-up look at lives that took a fateful turn when passion became obsession, love turned to hate, and ambition grew into ruthlessness. Notorious sheds new light on acts that disturb, outrage, shock or revolt, and it brings to life their impact on the people involved - and on all of us.
?ZONA brought contemporary energy to the presentation of the series and captured the core idea - our fascination with people who have become famous for being infamous, people whose behavior crosses all lines of restraint, explained Biography Channel Vice President of Marketing John Hartinger. ?ZONA starts every project with a strong understanding of the brand, what we want to do with the brand, the spirit of the brand and how the program series needs to reflect the overall sensibility of the channel environment. They are good collaborators, they listen and respond and always work hard to make what is compelling and distinctive in each particular program series stand out, he added.
Zoa Martinez, Director/Creative Director of ZONA Design, the New York-based design studio described their thought process. ?We designed the ?T of the bold, red Notorious logo with a sharp, knife-like edge to underscore the idea that these people were dangerous. The nine featured in the program were all skilled manipulators of the media. We took our cue from them and created modern day wanted posters in which each is reduced to the single identifier that remains in the public consciousness Gravano - ?rat, O.J.- ?suspect, Fleiss - ?madam, Wuornos - ?hooker, Dahmer - ?cannibal, and so on. Our intent was to create the feeling of an authentic media frenzy surrounding each of them. Although the images move quickly, we took great pains to create depth, and many layers of information to support each image. For example, behind Gravano is a dumpster in a decaying urban environment it is so perfect - he is a ?rat; the Fleiss poster and monitor contain flashes reminiscent of the paparazzi which followed her, and her clientele; and, the image of O.J. seems to be caught in the glare of headlights. We put a great deal of thought and energy into the individual shots which resolve to the larger wanted poster.
In addition to Director/Creative Director Zoa Martinez, ZONAs seasoned team, known for their distinctive and effective designs, included Executive Producer Dennis Fluet; Designers Agnes Nowakowska and Youngha Park; Composite Artist/Editor Supara Sophonwasu; and DP Teo Maniaci.
ZONA utilized ADOBE After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop in the execution of this project.
The Biography Channel was represented by Vice President of Marketing John Hartinger and Director of Programming Peter Tarshis.
Rob Kahn of RK Music (New York, NY) provided the musical bed for the programming and promotion packages, and completed the final audio mix as well.
