Constructware and ViaSat to Offer Satellite-Based Internet Service to Construction Sites (January 16, 2002)
Getting Internet service from local providers means dealing with different companies, different capabilities and the time it will take to get it arranged is impossible to gauge. Now, you can contract with one company and take the same Internet service with you wherever you go.

Constructware and ViaSat have entered an agreement to provide managed satellite Internet services to the construction industry.

The multi-year agreement calls for Constructware to act as the sales and distribution channel for ViaSats satellite-based Internet services to the vertical construction sector, starting first in North America and extending globally as demand warrants. The offering will be branded as Constructware ET (Extra Terrestrial), indicating the difference in the satellite-based Internet service available from ViaSat and Constructware compared to terrestrial, wireless or broadband Internet services.

The key benefit for construction project teams compared to other existing technologies is the ability to have reliable high-speed Internet service on any project location within 15 business days, without having to rely on local carriers. In the current telecommunications climate, the availability of high speed Internet access at new project sites is sparse, and project teams sometimes spend weeks investigating and securing basic Internet access from local service providers. Constructware began researching alternates in early 2000 and approached ViaSat in early 2001.

"This is the solution weve been looking for," says Howie Piersma, Director of IT for Chicago-based Pepper Construction Company. "Getting Internet service from the local phone providers to our jobsites is often difficult and always time consuming. You have to start from scratch with each project because no two locations have the same service options - it literally is different mile by mile." Pepper Construction, the dominant construction firm in the Chicago area, has standardized on Constructwares 100% Internet-based project management and collaboration solution since early 1999. "Having reliable Internet access at the start of a job is crucial to getting the workflows and procedures in place between all the players so we can deliver a superior product for our clients." Piersma notes that Pepper plans to be one of the first to deploy Constructware ET on remote jobsites.
