XM Productions/Effanel Music Relies on Digidesign ICONCaptures the VMAs, Fashion Rocks & Jazz at Lincoln Center events with Digidesign ICON (October 03, 2005)
Digidesign is excited to announce that XM Productions/Effanel Music (Effanel) relied on the ICON integrated console environment to successfully capture and mix the Video Music Awards, Fashion Rocks and Jazz at Lincoln Center events for broadcast. Using an ICON-equipped R7 remote recording truck, Effanel recorded the events into Pro Tools via two 96-channel interfaces and mixed them on an ICON D-Control worksurface. Effanel reported that the ICON worked out so well that it now plans to use its ICON-equipped L7 mobile recording truck to capture the upcoming Grammy Awards and other future telecasts.
"The ICON is the best thing to happen to large scale, multi-artist, concert recordings and broadcasts in 20 years,” attests Randy Ezratty, Senior Vice President for Effanel. “With the ICON, we're finally bringing the power, the fidelity and the ubiquity of Pro Tools to the live recording and broadcast platform. Our clients can now feel like they’ve never left the studio." Effanel regularly uses the ICON on its L7 Recording Truck, as well as in its studios.
"We just got the ICON on the truck a month ago and we've already had great success with it," says John Harris, lead music mixer for Effanel. "We just did the Fashion Rocks show in New York last week where it had to go to post right away. I was able to just pick up the hard drives out of my remote unit, walk across town to our fixed facility at Lincoln Center Jazz, and have the whole thing come up on the computer. So I could work on the post of the project fifteen minutes after the recording ended. That's why we've gone with the ICON. For that reason, it's already proven why the ICON is valuable to this type of a project. That's the whole idea of us being mobile and being able to move projects around."
The Fashion Rocks show finished taping at 11pm, but Harris still had to deliver the finished mixed show by 7am. "I could have gone into a studio and had to recreate the mix from the ground up, starting with a kick drum," he says. "But instead I could take the session from the ICON on the truck and marry it to the audio that I'd just recorded. And putting it up on the ICON in the studio, I had my exact same mix in front of me in another location, ready to go, while the truck was driving off down the road."
Before getting the ICON, the truck had been equipped with a Neve Capricorn. But Effanel found the ICON to be a better choice for mobile recording. "I like being able to try new equalizers and compressors,” says Harris. “I also like that you've got a bunch of consoles you can try out - just by changing some plug-ins - all within the framework of the ICON. I can make an Oxford out of it. And then if I don't like that, I can move on to the Liquid Channel or something else."
In an intense industry like live television production tied to live musical performances, there is absolutely no room for error and instability. For the VMAs, Effanel was relieved to find that the ICON and Pro Tools performed flawlessly for 12-17 hours per day for five days straight. Effanel then used Pro Tools and ICON to remix the show for broadcast.
