Wondertouch Professional Emitter Libraries

Add-on particle emitter libraries for ParticleIllusion 3 By Dave Nagel
Summary: The Wondertouch Professional Emitter Libraries comprise six individual collections of particle emitters for ParticleIllusion 3 (Mac and Windows) that can be purchased together or individually. These include: Abstract, Artistic, Eclectic 1, Eclectic 2, Graph and Distortion and Logo and Text. Developed by ParticleIllusion artists, these libraries differentiate themselves from the free monthly emitter libraries in their complexity and, in many cases, sheer beauty. The collections are geared primarily toward abstract motion backgrounds, though there are also some effects (such as fire, smoke and explosions) included.
Manufacturer: Wondertouch (
Platform: Mac OS X and Windows (ParticleIllusion 3 required)
Price: $175 for all six libraries; $39 for individual libraries.
Users: Motion graphics artists
Recommendation: Buy

One of the great things about Wondertouch ParticleIllusion--aside from the power and versatility of the particle engine itself--is that a new and free emitter library is released every month, so that the list of available presets is ever-expanding. Now Wondertouch has released its first paid collections of add-on emitters. What distinguishes these from the presets already included with the software and the ones included in the regular monthly updates?

In a word: beauty.

The sheer gorgeousness of many of these emitters stands out as the defining characteristic of this collection. There's a delicateness to the figures, movement and interaction of the particles that hasn't quite been captured in other particle collections I've seen. You'll find some great emitters, to be sure, in other particle collections--including those that ship with ParticleIllusion and in the free monthly updates--but the Professional Emitter Libraries strike me quite clearly as a sort of "Best of ParticleIllusion in Six Volumes."

Of course, not everything in these collections--available separately or complete--will suit your tastes. But it's unlikely you'd use any of these as-is anyway, or else you might as well just buy stock motion backgrounds, rather than render canned effects. But these emitters are easily modifiable, so you can produce your own motion graphics in no time. The emitters included in these six libraries will certainly give you a great head start in creating your own complex effects.

The collections
Included in the Professional Emitter Libraries are six individual libraries, each containing 30 individual emitters. These include: Abstract, Artistic, Eclectic 1, Eclectic 2, Graph and Distortion and Logo and Text. Individually, the libraries sell for $39; but all six can be purchased for $175. It makes sense to do that if you plan to buy four or more of the libraries. Here's what each one contains.

Designed by Phalkunabba Rath, the PE_Abstract library includes 30 emitters that are worth the price of admission for their value as objects of art in and of themselves. These emitters are tailor-made for motion backgrounds, and you'll certainly be able to use these to produce endless varieties of pleasing abstractions for your compositions.

Here are some motion examples from this library. Note that the Wondertouch Web site has more examples and that the ones shown here are at reduced size and reduced frame rate and are heavily compressed for the Web. Also note that the duration of each example is much shorter than the actual emitters.

The Abstract library is, incidentally, my favorite of all those included with the Pro Emitters collection.

The Artistic category, designed by Sasha Milica, is similar in purpose to the Abstract category: the creation of motion background. These ones are less abstract, however, and include presets ranging from metal and grass to flame and light patterns.

Eclectic 1
The third library in the collection, Eclectic 1, comes in a very close second for me. It includes--as you have to expect in a particle collection--several explosion and smoke effects. But it also has some abstract emitters, along with some gorgeous "space" effects (which are like blooming and contracting plasma effects). These ones were designed by Tom Granberg.

Here are some examples of these in motion.
