Witness: Ala. man appeared to be saving woman

Doctor testifies he saw Ala. man with arms around woman, apparently trying to save her By The Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) ' A witness says he saw a man with his arms around an Alabama woman, apparently trying to save her, moments before she sank to the ocean's bottom during a honeymoon dive in Australia.

Dr. Stanley Stutz testified Thursday in the capital murder trial of Gabe Watson. Stutz is a key witness for the prosecution.

Stutz told jurors he was diving when he saw Tina Thomas Watson floating with little movement in the water. Stutz says a man in a dark wetsuit went to her and reached his arms around her before swimming to the surface.

As the man swam upward, Stutz says the woman sank to the bottom and appeared to be dying.

In a boost for the defense, Stutz says he thought the man he believes was Watson was trying to save the woman.
