With cameras, informants, NYPD eyed mosquesSecret NYPD documents show efforts to spy on mosques, using informants, cameras on light poles
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ' Hundreds of secret New York Police Department documents show the NYPD targeting mosques and their congregations with tactics normally reserved for criminal organizations.
The documents offer the first glimpse of what NYPD informants gleaned from inside the houses of worship and paint a fuller picture of the city's approach to fighting terrorism.
Police officers snapped pictures and collected license plate numbers of congregants as they arrived to pray. Officers also deployed cameras on light poles to spy on mosques; looked for ways to shut down businesses providing mosque security; mapped and photographed mosques and listed the ethnic makeup of congregants.
The NYPD also kept files on sermons. The sermons were reported back to the NYPD by a network of informants and sent to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
