With Android Surging, iOS Remains Top Revenue eCommerce Generator in Ability Commerce Mobile Holiday Shopping Study(January 11, 2012)
Delray Beach, Fla. (PRWEB) January 11, 2012
Ecommerce software developer Ability Commerce has reported that its full-service clients saw an explosion in holiday revenue stemming from Android devices, however Apples iOS devices remained retailers top mobile platform. Mobile shopping overall was a huge success as retailers experienced increased visits, transactions and revenue across all of the major operating systems.
The number of Android transactions jumped 52 percent, while revenues from Android devices rose 173 percent. Androids growth was likely due to a slew of tablets released this year that employed Googles operating system. iOS saw an even more substantial transaction increase of 338 percent. The enormous jump in Android transactions was enough to overtake iPhone for the first time. iPad again led both in growth and absolute figures, as clients realized a 280 percent increase in revenue through the Apple device.
In general, all of Ability Commerces full-service clients shattered their mobile shopping records as consumers turned to their devices during the 2011 holiday shopping season.
We expected mobile shopping to be a robust growth channel this year, but these figures really point to a changing paradigm in how consumers shop, Diane Buzzeo, CEO of Ability Commerce, said. We emphasized to our clients how important mobile would be throughout the year, particularly during the holidays, and we expect this trend to continue in 2012 and beyond.
While the Android bump was surprising, even more jarring was the enormous jump in mobile shopping in general. All three of the major mobile operating systems measured triple digit increases in revenue for retailers.
Ability also found that while shoppers use smartphones to visit ecommerce pages more often, the iPad continues to indicate consumer intent to buy. Revenues from iPad were 33 percent higher than both iPhone and Android revenues combined, while the iPad represented one third as much traffic to clients web pages.
Finally, Android did experience a slightly greater percentage growth in traffic than iOS devices, indicating that Googles operating system may experience sustained revenue and transaction growth throughout the year.
Other Significant Observations
- Even Blackberry, whose developer, Research in Motion, has struggled lately, generated more mobile shopping revenue
- iPad generated 33 percent more revenue, but represented a third as much traffic, as iPhone and Android combined.
- Total mobile visits were up 205 percent across all full-service clients
- Total visits, revenue and transactions were all over their 2010
All of Ability Commerces full-service clients implement custom style sheets for mobile shoppers. Their mobile ecommerce platforms allow for better accessibility and streamlined checkout.
Data for the period of Nov. 25, 2011 through December 25, 2011 were pulled, analyzed and compared.
