WiebeTech Intros FireWire Drives, RAIDs

Driverless RAIDs to be available up to 240 GB By Dave Nagel
WiebeTech has announced several new models of FireWire and USB 2.0 external drives and FireWire RAIDs. The new RAIDs are designed specifically for Mac OS X and require no drivers, according to the company. The regular external drives, which feature both USB and FireWire ports, also require no drivers and are designed for Mac and Windows.

The FireWire RAIDs features two 7,200 RPM mechanisms in a single enclosure. Each drive has a separate FireWire bridge board, allowing for independent operation, as well as striping and mirroring without drivers under OS X. They also include a PCI FireWire host card. The RAIDs measure 7.5" x 2."4 x 4.6".

The RAIDs will be available Oct. 18 in the following capacities: 120 GB for $499.95; 160 GB for $599.95; and 240 GB for $699.95.

The new single drives (the Super DesktopGB series) are FireWire bus-powered and also include a USB 2.0 port, which is backward compatible with USB 1.1. The FireWire ports can be daisy chained, and the drive is bootable for Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. All models are bundled with MediaFour's MacDrive 5 software, which allows Super DesktopGB to mount on Windows computers when the drive is formatted as a Mac volume. An AC adapter is also included.

The new models will be available Sept. 20 in the following configurations: 40 GB/5,400 RPM for $219.95; 80 GB/7,200 RPM for $249.95; 120 GB/7,200 RPM for $299.95.
