WiebeTech Beefs Up Portable Drives

Desktop models also gain USB 2.0 connectors By Dave Nagel
WiebeTech has revamped two of its lines of external storage devices. These include a reconfiguration of its portable UltraGB models and the addition of USB 2.0 ports to its DesktopGB+ models. The new versions are available now.

For the desktop line, the DesktopGB+ external drives gain an additional USB 2.0/1.1 port. The drives now offer both USB 2.0/1.1 and FireWire 400 connections. The desktop models include an enclosure, vertical stand, FireWire and USB cables, AC adapters and Mac Drive 5 software. (Mac Drive allows PCs to mount drives formatted for the Macintosh.) All of the drives in the line use 7,200 RPM mechanisms and are available in capacities ranging from 80 GB to 250 GB. Prices on most models have also been reduced by $10 to $30, so they now start at $209.95 for the 80 GB model and go up to $599.95 for the 250 GB model. A bare version (no drive) is also available for $139.95.

On the portable front, the company has boosted the capacity of its UltraGB models up to 250 GB. WiebeTech's 7,200 RPM UltraGB drives are bus-powered and offer sustained transfer rates of more than 30 MB per second (in FireWire mode). Like the DesktopGB+ line, the UltraGB portable models include connectors for USB 2.0/1.1 and FireWire 400. They range in capacity from 80 GB to 250 GB and sell for $319.95 to $699.95. (Prices on the 80 GB and 120 GB models have been reduced $40 and $50, respectively.) A bare 0 GB version is also available for $199.95. The UltraGB models also ship with enclosure, vertical stand, FireWire and USB cables, AC adapter and Mac Drive 5 software.

All of the drives are compatible with Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows. For more information, visit
