Whodoo EFX ?Stretches Their Talent in New Spots

Visual effects boutique switches gears from features to commercials (December 14, 2004)

Directly on the heels of completing the visual effects for this summers comedy hit, Paramount Pictures ?The Stepford Wives, Whodoo EFX took on a series of commercial projects, which began airing this fall. Most notably is the new ?Ultra Chan spot featuring international action star Jackie Chan via ad agency Campbell Mithun for Hefty. The new spot, which includes Chan taking on a force of ninjas utilizing Hefty Ultra-Flex bags to fight back, broke last week.

Whodoo EFX President/Visual Effects Supervisor Helena Packer and Executive Producer Mark Ritcheson easily switched gears from providing visual effects for a feature film (the effects-heavy ?Stepford was an 8-month project) to applying their companys unique talent to three commercial projects. In addition to the signature Hefty spot starring Jackie Chan, Whodoo EFX also contributed their talent to spots for Atari and Pfizer.

?These projects represent a significant stride forward in our commercial visual effects production, says Ritcheson. ?We consider the relationship with all three clients to be important for us as a company. We are very happy that the creatives chose us to do the work, seeing how competitive the commercial visual effects market is now. We look forward to collaborating on future projects with all three of these clients."

From the creative standpoint, Packer notes how refreshing the three projects were. ?Its fun to bounce between features and commercials to keep you creatively challenged. Its enjoyable and stimulating all at the same time.

According to Packer, one challenge of the Hefty spot featuring Jackie Chan was: ?having him appear as if he was really walking on water. For the Atari spot, ?it was creating destruction, without being too violent since it was intended for kids. And finally for the Pfizer Lipitor spot, the creative challenge was making an inanimate object a sign look as if it was chasing a skier down a hill. Says Packer: ?Giving life to an inanimate object has been a challenge since Disney did it in the ?30s. Now 3D gives you more tools, but ultimately its about the right aesthetic choices.

Hefty ?Ultra Chan begins with Jackie Chan calmly raking leaves in his backyard by the pool. A force of ninjas appear, and Chan utilizes the new Hefty Ultra Flex bags to fight them off. One by one, he defeats them pushing them all into the pool. The spot concludes with Chan victorious holding up a full Hefty Ultra Flex bag, noting they are ?strong like me!

In the new Atari spot, a young gamer creates his own version of an amusement park via Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, where roller coasters fly into the air, Ferris Wheels become unhinged and a panda bear clears out the food court using a leaf blower. In the new Pfizer spot for Lipitor, an advanced skier is chased down a steep hill by a sign showing his high-cholesterol level. But he can never out run it without help from Lipitor.
