When the Show Can't Go On

Strange Company Describes the Decision to Cancel Lithtech Film Producer By Denise Harrison
With the way technology moves these days, it's not unusual at all for companies to cancel long-term development projects as they watch technology zoom past them, or make a sharp unexpected, right turn. One such company is Strange Company. Edinburgh, Scotland-based Strange Company is one of the premiere production companies dedicated to using and furthering use of the computer animation technique called Machinima. Machinima - real-time true 3D animation that doesn't need multi-million dollar rendering setups, can be distributed over the Internet in minute file sizes and played back at very nice resolution on any modern computer.

The company was developing Lithtech Film Producer, whiich would transform the incredibly complex Lithtech 3D engine into a fully-fledged 3D animation package the likes of Flash or Kaydara Filmbox, explained the company. This year, however, they determined the resources required to finish it would be far too taxing.

Most companies that start such projects run just this risk - that long-term development projects won't see the light of day. Digital Game Developer talked to Strange Company Artistic Director Hugh Hancock, asking him to share insights that might be informative to other companies in our industry.
