Whatís Networking Projectors Good For, Today?

By Gary Kayye, CTS
Now that we have had shipping "networkable" projectors for nearly 6-months now, I thought it might be a good time to address the applications for networking a projector today as well as take a look at the future.

Right now, there are two main applications for networking projectors in a ProAV installation. The first I will call Remote Management and Diagnostics (RMD). RMD is a fairly simple concept thatís been perfected by companies like AMX and Crestron in sophisticated control systems but has been made available in s simplified version through networking the projector and companies like InFocus, Epson, NEC, Mitsubishi, Sharp and Sony. The application for RMD is the ability for a customer, corporate AV director or even a ProAV dealer to remotely manage a projector from virtually anywhere (as long as the projector is connected to an internal LAN, WAN or the Internet) as well as diagnose user problems (what I call ESO error -- Equipment Superior to Operator) and potential projector problems.
