Western Images to Focus on Visual FX, CGI, and Avid Editorial

(July 17, 2001)
Western Images is restructuring to focus solely on visual effects, CGI, design direction and creative, Avid-based editorial. Facility services, including linear edit suite, Henry, telecine, and video service bureau, will be discontinued when current commitments are satisfied next month.

In addition to Western's strong commercial reputation, the company will expand its efforts in long-form broadcast (Western handled visual effects and completion for three seasons of Emmy award-winning George Lukas series "The Chronicles of Young Indiana Jones"), and feature film effects (Western completed effects for Francis Ford Coppola's, "Jack," and New Line Cinema' "Spawn," among others).

"Our restructuring will allow for a much more concerted efforts into these areas of past success," said Cunningham. "We see a great deal of activity in these areas and will expand our customer base to include more work a well as make a stronger commitment to service the commercial sector."

As a result of the restructuring, five people have been let go. Fou were related to fax work, the fifth was executive producer Ken Solomon. "Kenny (Solomon) worked very hard and was very good. However, today' market circumstances suggest other ways to capture new business," said Cunningham.

"Western Images' owner Robert Stover, remains committed to the continued operation of the company and fully supports us as we navigate changes in the industry to be poised to excel in a contemporary way," added Cunningham. "We stand much better to grow this company and are reorganizing in anticipation of the business upturn."

Western recently completed an expansive identity package to launch ShopNBC network, which reaffirmed its ability to execute high quality, innovative work. "These kinds of creative assignments, and our great cutting and CG animation, is where we plan to focus our energies," said Cunningham.

Four years ago Western Images introduced CGI capabilities and the company's creative editorial and design have been integrated for nearly three years. "Experience, market and client acceptance has led us to this reorganization and focus," said Cunningham. "The Western reel looks great, its innovative and of high quality creatively and technically, this strength gives us stability and the ability to weather economic downturns."
