Western Digital Ships FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo Drives

New version supports wider range of plugins By Dave Nagel
Western Digital has released a new line of combo FireWire/USB 2.0 external hard drives. The new models are available now for Macintosh and Windows systems in capacities up to 200 GB.

According to Western Digital, the new models come equipped with 7,200 RPM mechanisms from the company's Caviar line of drives. They offer a 2 MB buffer with an average read seek time of 8.9 milliseconds and a 4.2 ms average latency. The USB 2.0 ports are backward-compatible with USB 1.1.

The Western Digital FireWire/USB combo drives are available in two capacities: 120 GB and 200 GB. The 120 GB model sells for $299. The 200 GB model sells for $399. They support Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows. For more information, visit
