Weekly Download: Studio Artist Paint Patches, Series 10

15 erasers for Studio Artist 3.0 By Dave Nagel
Studio Artist 3.0 is out. You have our review and recommendation, so I assume that, if you don't already own it, you ordered it via ground delivery and are simply waiting for it to arrive. In either case, you'll be happy to know that we have a whole slew of free addons planned for this software, from our continuing series of brushes all the way up to full-fledged effects filters. But to start things off, I wanted to get you some simple, utilitarian presets, in this case some erasers that are designed to be a bit more flexible than the ones included with the program, ones that will hopefully suit any conceivable project you might be working on.

Now, I know that erasers aren't the most exciting category of brushes for most Studio Artist users. But erasers aren't just for undoing "mistakes." They're also useful for blending or smearing your image. But probably more important, the erasers that are included with Studio Artist might not meet all of your needs, especially if you work with transparency (alpha) consistently or otherwise need to erase to colors other than white. Of course, all of these capabilities are within your reach vis a vis Studio Artist's Paint Synthesizer, but I figured I'd save you an awful lot of trial and error by giving you a decent start on these things. Because of the way Studio Artist's alpha works, you might have to spend hours or days to come up with erasers that suit your needs. (I know I did.) So, even if these erasers aren't exactly what you need, at least they'll give you a good head start for creating your own.

Included in this collection are 15 erasers: five base types with three variations on each. The base types include Erase to Transparency, Erase to Black, Erase to White, Erase to Color (currently selected foreground color) and Erase to Source image (which reveals the source image as it eliminates whatever's currently on your canvas. The variations include basic Erase, Smudge (which warps the canvas as it erases) and Soft Erase. And each one has been painstakingly created with custom icons to help you identify which kind of eraser you're looking at. Here's a look at what's included.

Note that these brushes require Studio Artist version 3.0 and will not work in earlier versions.
