Weekly Download: Paint Patches for Studio Artist 2.0Image processing and brush presets
Incidentally, since I started this weekly download feature a month ago, I've been accused of being a complete Mac-head for no other reason than all of my downloads are compressed in Stuffit Expander, which is popular on the Macintosh but, which also happens to be available for the PC for free as well. Well, I don't deny it. And while I'd like to make my downloads available to all of my readers, this week's happens to be exclusive to my Mac readership, since Studio Artist itself is only available for the Macintosh. (For more information about the software or to download a demo, visit http://www.synthetik.com.
At any rate, those of you who are still with me will find the download file on the next page--in a Stuffit archive, no less!--along with installation instructions. First, let's take a look at the new presets
The Paint Patches
All of the presets in this week's package fall into the category of Paint Patches, although, as I've said, many of them are image processing effects. I distinguish image processing and brush presets by their dependency on the source image to achieve their effect. A brush is more or less a manual tool, which an image processing Paint Patch creates effects over the source image.
All told, there are 55 presets in this package--Nagel Series 1 Paint Patches--in six different categories: Abstract, Crayons, Etches, Fills, Sponges and Sprays. I've tried to place each of these into folder categories that make sense for easy access and also to create preset icons that show what each one does on a close-up scale. However, many of these paint Patches are designed for use on large images, and an icon can only show so much. Oh well.
In the Crayon category, I've tried to supplement the crayons built into Studio Artist 2.0 with more natural-looking textures. There are 29 crayons in this collection, and each one is designed as a painting tool rather than as an image processing effect, although some can be used for both.
In the category of Etches, I've only included two presets. Both work as image processing effects and can be applied automatically or by hand.
The Fills category includes seven presets that are designed to process a source image and fill the image with simplified color or rough texture.

The Sponges category contains but two presets, both of which are quite similar. They're designed to simulate a sponge-paint effect and work as both image processing and painting tools.
And, finally, we have our sprays, some of which are designed as image processors and some as painting tools. There are 13 Sprays in the collection.
