Weekly Download: Natural Media Brushes for Adobe Illustrator 10

Cloth, charcoal, chalk and rags By Dave Nagel
For the last few days, I've been preparing a set of natural media brushes for Adobe Illustrator. Now, this is an activity I highly recommend for any of you out there who have committed crimes against humanity or other terrible sins and feel you need to atone through painstaking, frustrating labor. For you innocents out there, you can simply download the product of my own atonement, otherwise known as Nagel Series 1 Illustrator Brushes.

First off, get these while you can. I plan never, ever to engage in this activity again, so this is the very last set of natural media brushes for Illustrator that I will ever produce. I'll do some other kinds of Illustrator brushes in the future, but these ones just took too much out of me.

The brushes
Each brush is designed in some way to approximate natural media in one of four categories: chalk, charcoal, rags and cloth. Every single minute detail of these brushes is vector-based, and they can be expanded or manipulated in any way that Illustrator can handle vectors, which is, incidentally, quite a lot. Some are highly detailed and can put a bit of a strain on slower systems.

In addition to the 23 brushes, I've also included in the brush file a sample of every brush tip shape used in this series, which you can use to engineer your own brushes, assuming you would like to try some variations on the dynamics used inn this collection. But, again, you might want to hold off on this activity until you think you need to atone for something evil you've done.

The Chalk brushes (seven total) are designed to emulate chalk and Conte crayons. They're all multiplied, so for those of you who want to apply these brushes over darker backgrounds, you'll want to use the supplied brush tips to create variations.

Of Cloth brushes there is but one. Owing to Illustrator's limited dynamics, it's difficult to generate variation. However, if you feel the urge, you can borrow elements from the supplied cloth brush to create your own.

The Charcoal brushes (eight total) are variations on charcoal effects, some with canvas textures, some without.

The Rags (seven total) in this collection are designed to emulate porous dish rags with paint applied. They scatter and tumble and darken or multiply over existing colors.
