WealthTV Gives Viewers a Taste of The Best

AFA and Ascent Media deliver HD cable and satellite facility (July 29, 2004)

Robert Herring, Sr., founder, CEO and president of Herring Broadcasting, Inc., had a few specific demands for his new network, WealthTV. It had to broadcast in high definition (HD), be built by the best, be equipped with the finest, and launch in late Q2. So he turned to A. F. Associates (AFA) and Ascent Medias Systems & Technology Services (S&TS) to design, build and deliver a start-up cable network and satellite facility in San Diego, CA. WealthTV launched in high definition on June 1, weeks ahead of schedule. AFA, an Ascent Media Network Services company, is the leader in the design and integration of turnkey systems for broadcast, cable, satellite and corporate clients.

?The most important thing Ive learned in business is to hire the right people, said Herring. ?I knew what I wanted to achieve, but I didnt know how to get there. I put my confidence in A. F. Associates and the whole Ascent Media team for the technical portions of the project which left me free to concentrate on programming.

Herring, a man who admits to very humble roots, envisions WealthTV as a visually stunning source of entertainment for those that enjoy luxury as well as those who aspire to a lavish lifestyle. ?I grew up in extremely modest surroundings, Herring stated. ?I want WealthTV to serve as a sort of shopping channel to those that have already made their fortunes as well as provide a pleasant diversion for those who are entertained by that standard of living.?

Successfully launched on June 1, 2004, WealthTV uplinks twin signals to PanAmSat Galaxy 13, the premiere HD neighborhood for national cable networks. Ascent Media S&TS headed up the satellite uplink and encoding aspects of the project by providing a turnkey system that included dish installation. The primary signal is a high definition 1080i signal, providing viewers with the highest picture quality available. In addition, WealthTV is broadcasting a downconverted standard digital signal to reach the maximum number of subscribers.

?We are excited about playing such a critical role in the launch of a startup high definition channel, stated Tom Canavan, President of AFA, and Senior Vice President, Ascent Media S&TS. ?WealthTV is the perfect project to demonstrate the depth of Ascent Medias all-encompassing ability to provide an ?end-to-end solution- from production to playout through satellite systems".

The 40,000 sq. ft. facility, one of the most advanced state-of-the-art high definition studios ever built, utilizes the latest high definition technology by Sony. AFA designed and installed the all HD system that features a Sony MVS 8000 production switcher, Sony routing and monitoring. Dolby surround sound processing is featured with a Sony DMXR100 audio mixer. Three Sony HDC 930 cameras with Vinten tripods and pan/tilt heads grace a 47 by 48 foot studio.

Master Control is being run by Harris Automation with Pinnacle video servers. Dolby 5.1 encoders feed the audio along with the video to Motorola encoding equipment for the uplink. Discreet Logic Smoke is the high-end editor of choice for WealthTVs multiple post-production suites. Apple Final Cut Pro running on Apple G5 computers fills in the edit area with the ability to finish in full resolution HD.

The 24/7 cable television networks extensive lineup features original programming in true HD format, providing viewers with the highest picture quality. The network initially reached out to approximately 750,000 subscribers and hopes to be received in 80 million homes around the globe via cable and satellite service providers.

The project was the first to tap the combined resources of AFA and its newly acquired west coast location (former Sony Systems Integration). April Calou, Senior Project Manager for AFA West, led the team that completed the start-up network within five months.
