Waterman Broadcasting Taps BitCentral’s Play-to-Air SolutionBitCentral to install its Précis End-to-End Play-to-Air system into all stations (April 27, 2005)
BitCentral, Inc., a leading provider of video content management and distribution solutions, recently announced that Waterman Broadcasting of Ft. Meyers, FL has purchased the company’s Précis End-to-End Play-to-Air system for all of the corporation’s stations, located in the Southern United States. The stations set to receive Précis include both the ABC and NBC affiliates in Ft. Meyers, FL, as well as the NBC affiliate station in Charlottesville, VA.
The BitCentral Précis solution gives national and regional broadcast outlets the ability to immediately upgrade to a file based news workflow from ingest to air by providing a station’s news team with the best tools possible to quickly deliver high quality news to its market. Précis is an integrated solution ingesting multiple analog NTSC sources, such as microwave feeds or SDI sources, into the station’s digital workflow, and allows the news team to gather, edit, and file stories remotely. Précis also adds end-to-end, redundant digital news management solutions with non-proprietary storage and archiving capabilities.
In addition to the robust features and attractive price point of Précis, Waterman Broadcasting selected this product solution because NBC successfully deployed BitCentral’s MediaPipe news management and distribution system in 2003 at the NBC NewsChannel for the clean and clear dissemination of national news to various affiliate stations nationally, including the two corresponding outlets owned by Waterman Broadcasting in Ft. Meyers, FL and Charlottesville, VA.
“BitCentral’s Précis solution will greatly benefit Waterman Broadcasting’s affiliate stations by delivering the ability to seamlessly integrate local news into the national news interface,” said Fred Fourcher, CEO for BitCentral. “Our MediaPipe news management and distribution system has worked flawlessly at the NBC NewsChannel, and we look forward to our Précis solution to provide Waterman’s stations a more efficient workflow process that will save these stations both time and money as well as generate better quality video. Since national stories are already delivered to two Waterman stations through our system, the Précis solution is the logical next step to further streamline their workflow. No other company can integrate local and national news as efficiently as we can and more importantly, Précis can be purchased for considerably less cost of other similar digital systems and installation is measured in hours instead of weeks.”
“We thoroughly surveyed the market and found no other competing product to be as comprehensive, easy-to-install, or attractively priced as the Précis solution from BitCentral,” concurred Dan Billings, Director of Engineering and Technology for Waterman Broadcasting. “The entire system is able to be installed and be on-line in a matter of hours and, more importantly, is very user friendly. Our station personnel have quickly adapted to the more efficient workflow, which is another benefit in the ever-changing news landscape where time is always a critical resource.”
According to BitCentral, tape based stations can spend between 30 to 90 minutes to prepare a clip for air, which includes a significant amount of time ‘sneaker netting’ around the station, due to the lack of a networked environment. In contrast, Précis is a computer based solution using a file based system so raw footage can be ingested and edited in the field and the finished clip sent to the station over microwave or even over the internet. “Even if the clip is walked in the door on tape, it can be edited and ready to air in 3 to 5 minutes,” continued Fourcher, “dramatically reducing the time to air, while offering a significant competitive market advantage.”
“BitCentral is pleased to forge a relationship with Waterman Broadcasting and looks forward to the station reaping the benefits of our Précis End-to-End Play-to-Air system. We are firmly committed to changing the entire production workflow paradigm that has plagued the national and regional broadcast industry for some time,” concluded Fourcher. “Ultimately, the Précis system will provide producers more control over their stories and give them the ability to create higher quality segments while also greatly increasing the speed-to-air time and improving the bottom line for station owners.”
