Wacom Releases OS X Driver Today

Software supports Native and Classic environments By Dave Nagel
Those of us who made the switch to OS X early on suddenly found ourselves without the use of our graphics tablets. It was a compromise some, but not all, graphics professionals were willing to make in order to take advantage of the features OS X did offer at the time. Now Wacom has announced the beta release of its full Mac OS X driver, which supports pressure and works in both Classic and Native modes.

There had been a previous driver in the form of a standalone application distributed with Toon Boom Technologies' Toon Boom Studio for OS X, but that "driver" did nothing more than treat the tablet as a standard mouse. The new version does support pressure input; whether it supports tilt at this point is unclear, but we'll bring you an update as soon as we've had a chance to test it out.

The new driver, being distributed freely on Wacom's site as of today, requires Mac OS X 10.1. At the time of this writing, Apple had not yet announced 10.1, but it is expected to be announced later today with a ship date or delivery date at the end of the week. (We'll bring you an update when Apple makes the formal announcement.)

The driver itself, as a part of OS X 10.1, features memory protection and preemptive multitasking. The new software will include an installer, driver and control panel, according to Wacom.
