WTTW-TV Chooses Sony Monitors For Digital Control RoomUpgrade includes a combination of LUMA LCD and BVM-A CRT displays (August 17, 2005)
WTTW-TV (Channel 11) in Chicago is making Sony professional LCD and CRT monitors the centerpiece of its new digital multi-format control room. The station is installing several LUMA LCD and BVM-A CRT monitors to enhance overall image quality in a variety of applications and to upgrade the station's monitoring capabilities.
"At WTTW, we are currently heavily invested in CRT monitors," said Jerry Hanna, senior VP of engineering at WTTW. "Our entire base of color monitors consists of the Sony PVM/BVM series of CRT displays. As we transition to the newer technology displays, it was important to retain a similar `look' in terms of apparent resolution, colorimetry, black and white balance, grayscale tracking, and the ability to handle highlights. Other factors we considered included format scaling, acceptable contrast and off-axis viewing."
The station is installing several Sony LUMA LMD172WS 17-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) wide-screen monitors, which will co-exist with two Sony BVMA24E1WU 24-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) CRT monitors. "Although we understand there will be picture quality differences between CRT and LCD monitors, they will be grouped for specific applications," Hanna said.
According to Hanna, the 24-inch CRT widescreen monitors will be used for Line and Preview. They will be the "reference monitors" used in judging a final video product. The LUMA displays will primarily be used as camera monitors by directors and technical directors.
"Our technical team's expectations for accurately judging a picture presented by a camera are fairly critical here and we expect the LUMA displays to pass the test," Hanna said. "Framing, focus and color match done by the video-shader can only be judged in the control room with a high-quality monitor. In addition, there must be uniformity from monitor to monitor, especially in color consistency. These are the main reasons Sony was chosen. We believe they will provide the consistency we need now and well into the future."
All monitors will be installed with Sony's BKM 243 HS module, allowing them to accept either standard- or high-definition signals.
"Since the room will be multi-format, the auto-sensing feature of this module is critical," Hanna said. "Now, our switcher and router can change signals from HD to SD or vice versa and the monitor will automatically adjust. This eliminates the need for additional monitor routing or re-patching into two separate input modules."
