WSAW TV Rebuilds With Omneon Spectrum Media Server(January 24, 2005)
Omneon Video Networks today announced that CBS affiliate WSAW TV of Wausau, Wis., is installing an Omneon Spectrum video server system as part of a complete master control rebuild and upgrade. The Omneon system will sit at the center of the station's operations, providing storage for WSAW TV's commercial library, as well as storage and playout for syndicated programs and a variety of other media assets.
"The Omneon Spectrum can handle all of the file types that we need - DVCPRO, MPEG, you name it -- all within a single system," said Phil Hejtmanek, chief engineer at WSAW-TV. "The Omneon system handles the file formats we need today easily and also supports HD and other formats that we will need in the future."
WSAW TV's new Omneon server system will operate along with Sundance FastBreak AutomationT to provide tapeless storage and playout to drive the facility's updated digital infrastructure. With ample storage and built-in networking, WSAW TV's Omneon system is robust enough to support time-shift/time-delay and can be used as part of the facility's editing suite. Its 170-hour storage capacity will enable the station to use the new server like a tape machine and will support future integration with the newsroom's nonlinear editing system.
An exceptionally cost-effective and flexible media server designed for the professional television industry, the Omneon Spectrum media server provides WSAW TV with a reliable and highly scalable infrastructure for broadcast playout and storage applications. Its open architecture enables it to support a broad variety of third-party applications for control and transmission, media management, archiving, and collaborative production.
"The versatility of the Omneon server, the way the unit is constructed, just lends itself to unlimited expansion," added Hejtmanek. "Each Omneon server component is an independent, hot-pluggable device, so it's easy to build out. That convenience, coupled with ease of configuration, made commissioning of the server system very simple."
