WCPO-TV Uses NVISION Routing and Control Systems

Cincinnati-based station moves to new all-digital HD-compatible facility (October 06, 2004)

NVISION has supplied an integrated array of routing and control systems to WCPO-TV Channel 9, the E.W. Scripps-owned ABC affiliate serving the greater Cincinnati area. The new hardware includes an NV8256-Plus Digital Video Router, an NV7256 Digital Audio Router, an NV5128-MC Multichannel Master Control Switcher and an NV9000 Control System. The facility's NV8256-Plus Digital Video Router is configured for 32x32 HD/SWB, 128x128 SD-SDI plus 64x64 analog video, while the NV7256 Digital Audio Router will handle a mix of AES-format and analog audio signals.

"We had outgrown our existing facility, which was built in 1967," confides Joe Martinelli, WCPO-TV's head of engineering." The new building, which provides 60,000 square feet of space, was completed in June 2004. A. F. Associates served as system integrator on the installation. The new, ground-up facility utilizes Omneon Spectrum media servers, and comprises 10 edit bays, five high-end edit suites, four graphics suites, plus two identical on-air studios and companion control rooms.

"We visited the NVISION factory to see a prototype HD-capable [NV5128-MC] master control switcher, and were very impressed," Martinelli recalls. "We finalized the deal at the NAB Convention. The switcher worked right out of the box, and has been totally reliable since then."

WCPO-TV's NV5128-MC master control system features two channels of SD and one channel of HD switching, each with multichannel audio. The companion NV8256-Plus video router handles both HD and SD signals. "Our primary HD output occurs in primetime, plus sports programming, but we wanted full HD compatibility through our Omneon video server. We have already received orders to play high-definition spots on WCPO-DT," concludes Martinelli.

"We are very proud to have supplied a fully integrated routing and control system to WCPO-TV," offers Jay Kuca, NVISION's Director of Marketing. "E.W. Scripps is the 15th largest TV station group in the United States; the company has an excellent reputation for its commitment to the broadcast industry. And since this order marked the first HD-compliant NV5128-MC Multichannel Master Control Switcher we have shipped to an end user, we made sure that the commissioning with WCPO-TV's engineering staff went very smoothly."

The NV5128-MC is based on the field-proven technology of the popular NV5128 multiformat router. This versatile 8RU system supports multi format routing, multi channel master control, or a combination of the two. The NV5128 platform accommodates all current digital and analog signal formats - HD, SD, analog video, analog audio, AES, and time code. "The NV5128-MC was designed with multichannel audio in mind," adds Kuca. "The entire audio path, including metering and monitoring, is a full eight channels wide." In addition, the system handles both direct and embedded audio. Built-in Dolby-E decoding is available as an extra cost option.

The NV5128-MC's Control Panel provides full operational control of one or more channels of master control, including source selection, transition control and audio monitoring. LCD pushbuttons can be relabeled electronically for Preset/Program source selection, while a built-in color LCD touch screen provides access to secondary system functions. "Design and layout of the panel has been optimized for intuitive operation and ease of use," Kuca explains. "Controls are arranged in logical groups, with dedicated controls for frequently used functions. Secondary functions may be accessed using the touch screen."
