Vizrt Intros Graphics Engine for Mobile Phone Video Viewing

Vizrt?s Viz|3G to Deliver Real-Time Graphics to Cell Phones (February 03, 2006)

On the heels of its 19 percent acquisition of Adactus, a Norwegian developer of multimedia delivery and consumption platforms based on the MPEG-21 standard, Vizrt is announcing the April 2006 availability of its Viz|3G graphics motor for mobile telephones and other mobile devices. Viz|3G, based on Vizrts Viz|Engine renderer and Adactus MPEG-21 standards-based multimedia delivery platform, marks the first integration of a graphics engine for mobile phone video viewing applications.

Adactus specializes in the transport of content to mobile phone platforms. Using its MPEG21-based platform, Adactus can detect the capabilities of each mobile phone, such as screen resolution, so that the content provider can deliver content adapted for each recipient. Content is delivered by providers to mobile terminals designed with a custom-made interface. Video transported to mobile phones must be compliant with current standards and within the parameters of each phone.

?As new phones and devices emerge, they support more advanced codecs, said Peder Drege, CEO, Adactus. ?We have the streaming, encoding and programming expertise, which enables a client solution for content presentation. Together with Vizrt, who are experts in broadcast graphics, weve created a platform where video can be delivered to cell phones within a secure environment, and the graphics can be rendered locally in a resolution that fits every phone. This will revolutionize mobile television.

Using the Viz|3G platform, graphics are sent as meta data (description of data) in a separate stream from the video, producing a much higher quality visual experience than compressing the graphics as part of the video stream. Currently, cell phone screens are too small and the video is too compressed for the graphics embedded within the video to be legible. With graphics as a separate stream and its enhanced readability, this creates ample opportunity for the customization and localization and personalization of targeted advertising placements.

Viz|3G enables broadcasters to create video and graphics content that is truly merged on the end users device where programming can be generated locally.

?Additionally, broadcasters will not need to integrate any new components in the broadcast workflow, since the mobile content production will be handled by Vizrt software, which many of the worlds top broadcasters already have, explained Isaac Hersly, President Vizrt Americas, Vizrt. ?Adactus and Vizrt have complimentary technologies. Adactus enables the video feed and client platform receiving the content, and Vizrt handles the integration of the broadcast workflow. Vizrt will utilize the Adactus platform to implement a graphics engine on the client.

Viz|3G will be available as part of a package installed on phones, or it may be downloaded and installed. It will be available worldwide, but with a select set of customers initially.

Viz|3G will debut at the NAB 2006 convention in Las Vegas this April.
