Virtools Supplies 3D Chat for International Children's Games

Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital partner with 3D software company (July 30, 2004)

Virtools, the leading solutions provider for interactive 3D applications, provided the Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital with a unique 3D chat room bringing children and their families together in a fun 3D environment.

Connecting children throughout the world during the International Children's Games (ICG) will be the joint effort of Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital (Rainbow) and the 3D Software Development company Virtools, headquartered in Paris, France with a North American subsidiary in Montreal, Canada.

A unique 3D chat room has been provided for use by Rainbow in the ICG's Rainbow CyberScene, a virtual world of computer games located just inside the West Porch of the Cleveland Convention Center in the Festival Village . The chat room, called ChatPark, will be populated by age appropriate cartoon avatars. Avatars are 3D figurines used in virtual reality. The avatars can be completely customized from hairstyle to clothing to skin tone to create a multicultural world-community.

The goal of the project is to create a place that brings together the fun and ease of communicating in a traditional chat-environment with the freedom to play in a lively 3D Space or in this case, Park, says William Winans, Rainbow's Developer of Creative Technologies. Players customize their avatar then run and jump over obstacles, trying to capture the fox from the other little big mouths in ChatPark, while touching base by typing instant messages.

More than 3,000 children from all over the world are participating in the games, July 29 August 2. Rainbow's Cyberscene and Virtools' ChatPark can help them stay connected to their families and friends as well as to the many new friends they meet during the Games.

Virtools is very committed to the Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital initiative and pleased to contribute to the success of Rainbow's event with ChatPark. We're thrilled to put non-violent gaming to work for kids by bringing children and their families together in a fun 3D environment. This is multiplayer interaction that provides a truly meaningful and shared experience, says Bertrand Duplat, Virtools CTO.

Virtools, founded in 1993, is a world leader in real-time 3D interactive software, used for creating virtual reality applications for industry leaders like Procter and Gamble, Airbus Industries, US Department of Energy, Aerospatiale and Peugeot SA, . In addition, Virtools development solutions are widely used for game and web applications by Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Atari, Microids, Dreamcatcher, and many others.

Development with Virtools will extend beyond the International Children's Games, to create non-violent interactive computer games for hospitalized children at Rainbow. ChatPark will remain for children at Rainbow, helping them to connect to their classmates and friends.
