Vintage Plugins Rule at AES

Digital recreations of classic analog processors were everywhere By Frank Moldstad

There were plugins galore introduced at the recently concluded 119th AES convention in New York, including a high percentage of digitally modeled versions of coveted hardware units. These ranged from SSLs LMC1 compressor and Chandler/Abbey Roads EMI compressor, to Universal Audios Roland Dimension D stereo chorus plug-in and Princeton Digitals Eventide reverb plugin. There were also some processors without analog roots, such as Waves Tune pitch-correction plugin and BIAS Master Perfection Suite of six mastering and sound design plugins.

But before we give away the store, lets get to our roundup. Companies are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference. This is the first in a series of product-specific reports from AES. Future articles will cover mixers, DAW software, microphones, outboard processors and other significant categories.

Master Perfection Suite in BIAS Peak
BIAS announced the Master Perfection Suite, a collection of six plug-ins for mastering and sound design. It is being released in the first quarter of next year for Audio Units, DirectX, RTAS, and VST host applications on Mac OS X and Windows XP. This is a standlone product separate from the recent Peak Pro XT 5 release that included the Master Perfection Suite as part of the toolset. Pricing is to be announced. www.bias-inc.com

Chandler Ltd./Abbey Road was demonstrating its EMI compressor plug in for Pro Tools, which is slated for January release for Pro Tools TDM and LE, plus a VST version. The plugin is a digital recreation of the famed EMI TG 12413 console limiter. Street price will be $600 TDM and $400 LE/VST. www.chandlerlimited.com,  www.abbeyroad.com

Digidesign has introduced the Drawmer TourBuss plug-in suite exclusively for use on its VENUE mixing console. Designed for live sound applications,  Drawmer TourBuss includes four dynamics plug-ins that emulate the sound of Drawmer's DS201 Noise Gate and DL241 Auto-Compressor hardware units. A full license is $875; limited-time licenses can also be purchased. Available only through the DigiStore (store.digidesign.com ).

Groove Monkee released the first library in a new series of Style Packs for FXpansion's BFD percussion program.. Called Style Pack #1 Metal, it contains more than 600 royalty free beats for Hard Rock and Metal. Mapped for both BFD and General MIDI, the grooves are available in five formats: BFD bundles, BFD single track, GM Single Track, GM Multi-Track and Cakewalk Session Drummer. Style Pack #1 is available now for $29.95 via download or on CD. www.groovemonkee.com.

One of the amps in AmpliTube 2.0
IK Multimedia showed AmpliTube 2.0, the latest version of its guitar amp and FX modeling plug-in. AmpliTube 2 has been redesigned with many new features, and five separate modules including Tuner, Stomp, Amp-head, Miked Cabinet and Rack effects. In conjunction with AmpliTube 2, IK Multimedia is introducing the AmpliTube StompIO, a dedicated USB foot controller. www.ikmultimedia.com/

McDSP announced an LE version of its tape tone emulation plugin that is more affordable than the full-featured version, called Analog Channel LE. Expected to ship in November 2005, it features a compact user interface, with recreations of the frequency responses and compression curves from Studer, Otari, MCI, Ampex, Sony, and Tascam decks. The MSRP is $195 (USD), and it is being released for RTAS/AudioSuite Mac and XP. www.mcdsp.com.

MOTU unveiled version 1.1 of its Symphonic Instrument universal orchestral plug-in, which adds disk streaming and support for multiple independent outputs. The update will be available as a free download for Mac and Windows this Fall. The MOTU Symphonic Instrument list price is $295. www.motu.com.

Princeton Digital's Plate 2016 interface
Princeton Digital announced a VST version of the Plate 2016 reverb, which recreates the hardware Eventide SP2016 Plate Reverb. It was previously released for Pro Tools. Plate 2016VST is priced at $99 and is available now. www.princetondigital.com.

Solid State Logic released the LMC1 plugin for free download to Mac users in the VST and Audio Units formats. The LMC1 is a digital model of the Listen Mic Compressor circuit included on vintage SSL 4000 consoles. www.solid-state-logic.com.

Arkamys released Upmix5, a plugin for Merging Technologies Pyramix Virtual Studio V5. It upmixes a stereo source to a 5.1 multichannel output. Upmix5 is designed for broadcast and post production applications on any stereo material; movie or music, enabling true 5.1 surround sound from any regular stereo source. www.arkamys.com/upmix5

SoundToys announced the SoundToys TDM Effects Bundle for ProTools TDM on Mac OSX. It includes nine effects plug-ins for professional audio, sound design, post production, and audio for gaming. The bundle will be released this fall for $1,195 (MSRP). www.soundtoys.com.

PowerCore Unplugged
TC Electronic brought a PCI card version of the PowerCore platform, called PowerCore Unplugged. It is the same hardware as the PowerCore PCI mkII without that units included plug-in bundle. This gives users the flexibility to purchase their own set of plugins for PowerCore , and also allows those with an existing PowerCore to run more plug-ins simultaneously. PowerCore Unplugged is shipping in October, with a $745 MSRP. www.tcelectronic.com.

TC Electronic also announced VSS3,  a System 6000 Stereo Plug-in for Pro Tools HD. This is an original reverb ported from a System 6000 harware unit. VSS3 is shipping in October 2005. MD3, DVR2 and NonLin2 are shipping during fall/winter 2005/2006. www.tcelectronic.com.



Universal Audio announced the release of v4.0 Software for its UAD-1 DSP Card, including the new Roland Dimension D stereo chorus plug-in. Users can demo the Dimension D for 14 days, and then purchase it US$149. A limited time offer includes a special Roland chorus bundle that includes both CE-1 and Dimension D for $199. my.uaudio.com Universal Audio also announced the new UAD-1 Flexi Pak, DSP Card & Powered Plug-Ins system, which includes the UAD-1 PCI DSP card and a $500USD voucher (registration required) that is redeemable for the customer's choice of UAD-1 plug-ins at the my.uaudio.com online store. The UAD-1 Flexi PAK has an MSRP of $899 ($699 estimated street price) and is shipping now. www.uaaudio.com

Classic Compressor Bundle from URS
URS (Unique Recording Software) announced the Classic Console Compressor Bundle, featuring digital recreations of the buss compressor/limiters of two well-known British mixing consoles. It includes a 1970 Compressor and a 1980 Compressor, with two versions each: the Compressor/Limiter/Side Chain version and the Compressor-only version. The URS Classic Console Compressor Bundle TDM version lists for $899.99 and includes TDM, RTAS, and AudioSuite for Macintosh OSX and OS9 and Windows XP. The URS Classic Console Compressor Bundle Native version lists for $449.99 and includes RTAS and AudioSuite for Macintosh OSX and OS9 and Windows XP. Owners of the URS Everything Bundle v4.0 can add the URS Classic Console Compressor Bundle for an introductory price of $699.99 for TDM and $349.99 for Native thorough October 31, 2005. www.ursplugins.com.

Waves introduced the Tune pitch-correction plug-in and DeBreath, a plug-in designed to remove unwanted breathing sounds from vocal tracks. Both plugins are included in Waves new Vocal Bundle -- Tune for $600 (MSRP) and DeBreath for $350 (MSRP). The Vocal Bundle is available for $1,000 (MSRP). All are in Native format. Waves also announced  Tune LT, a version with fewer features, that is now included in Waves' Gold, Broadcast & Production, Platinum, and Diamond Bundles. Registered users of those bundles who are currently covered by the Waves Update Plan (WUP) receive Tune LT at no charge. An upgrade to the full version of Tune is available for $300. www.waves.com.
