Versant Adds Java Data Objects Support for VOD Clients on Mac OS X

(August 30, 2011)

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 30, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Versant Corporation (Nasdaq:VSNT), an industry leader in specialized data management software, today announced Apple Mac OS X client support of the industry standard Java Data Objects (JDO) for the Versant Object Database (VOD) version 8. The JDO / VOD architecture supports agile development methods and improves runtime performance, especially with more complex data models, often by a factor of 10 or more.

JDO combined with VOD provides a simple and easy to use programming interface in which an application and the database can share the same data model, eliminating the need to create and maintain the database schema separately, and map objects into relational tables. Ideal for complex data sets in massive concurrent environments, VOD's support of JDO will enable Mac developers to create applications that require a near real-time database.

"Apple is known for its innovative and easy to use operating environment and their operating system has grown in popularity in recent years, and many developers are creating innovative high performance software applications such as graphic design, game design, and others," says Dirk Bartels, VP strategy at Versant. "Offering the JDO client API for Mac OS X enables these developers to integrate Versant's powerful high performance database into these applications."

Industry Standard Persistence for Java Programmers

The VOD 8 client for Mac OS X is available for the Java programming language. The application programming interface (API) is based on the Java persistence industry standard, Java Data Objects, also called JDO. VOD and its JDO client are successfully implemented in many leading applications. For example, North Side Inc., a gaming company, is developing an innovative multi-player game platform named Bot Colony.

"The ability to bypass splitting application objects into records and reconstituting them again when they're read in and used by the application was very attractive to us, and we decided to explore Versant as a solution," said Eugene Joseph, CEO at North Side Inc. "Our switch from MySQL to VOD and JDO has already helped improve the Bot Colony platform greatly."
