Vello's Transformational Networking Applies SDN for a Novel Integrated Cloud ServiceInnovative SDN Demo on Show at EMC World (May 22, 2012)
LAS VEGAS, NV -- (Marketwire) -- 05/22/12 -- Vello Systems announced today it is demonstrating its scale-out data center gateway solution for cloud data protection, Remote Data Replication Manager, at EMC World 2012. Vello provides customers with data center gateway networking solutions for ultra low latency content delivery, big data applications, business continuity and workload mobility within and between cloud data centers.
Storage solution vendors and their customers have consistently highlighted the network's complexity of management and low reliability as stumbling blocks to supporting mission critical data protection applications. Traditional network solutions have failed to cost-effectively and simply deliver resilient data center interconnects. For the first time in networking, a revolutionary new architecture, software-defined networking (SDN), has been applied to these challenges of multi-site data center interconnect, wide area networking and data protection. Vello Systems has leveraged the resiliency and programmability of SDN as the platform for the Remote Data Replication Manager (RDRM). RDRM intelligently configures an OpenFlow-enabled Vello network via extensions to OpenStack clouds. This solution enables multi-tenant, multi-site clouds to provide self-service compute, storage, and data protection services on-demand. OpenFlow-enabled SDN automates the process of providing network resources for storage replication, delivering better network optimization and rapid response to service demands in real-time.
Vello is a pioneer in applying SDN technology to data center networks, with the capability to interconnect storage and compute resources. An OpenFlow-enabled software-defined network transforms traditional networking through the power of network abstraction, centralized control, and policy driven programmability. While SDN is revolutionizing the network economics of warehouse-scale computing for companies like Google, enterprise customers can achieve similar mega-scale operational benefits at enterprise costs with Vello's SDN gateway solutions.
The demonstration at EMC World is based on sites in the New York metropolitan area equipped with Vello scale-out data center gateways including OpenFlow-enabled controllers, 10G switches, and gateways scalable to 7Tbps, powered by Vello's network operating system, VellOS. The demonstration can be seen, at Vello's EMC World booth, number 916.
Latency and network convergence issues common in today's multilayered networks have made remote storage replication over distance overly complex and challenging. The use of Vello's SDN enables a programmable, low-latency, automated on-demand solution resulting in a faster and more flexible network. For enterprises, Vello's SDN-based RDRM simplifies the process of network configuration and re-configuration, providing savings in network operations.
Using RDRM for OpenStack
OpenStack with Remote Data Replication Manager allows scale-up of automated tenant requests for hundreds or thousands of replicated storage volumes on demand with automated provisioning of SDN resources to correspond to the storage resources allocated. OpenStack with RDRM also allows administrators to manage all of the cloud tenant replication services and ensure high levels of customer experience while maintaining efficient network utilization.
Vello RDRM can be extended to include EMC SRDF, EMC RecoverPoint, VMware Site Recovery Manager, and other replication applications that can benefit from policy-controlled scaling of network services and fine-grained management of capacity for end-to-end storage connections.
"Innovative uses of technologies such as OpenFlow that manage high speed connectivity in a policy driven way will be of increasing interest to organizations that will be transitioning from legacy recovery to resilience-centric operation," said Gartner analyst John Morency.
"Customers come to EMC World to see the latest in innovative products to address their data management and protection requirements. With the Remote Data Replication Manager, Vello is demonstrating application integration in a simple, reliable, easy-to-manage solution with compelling economics," said Vello CEO Karl May. "Over time, software-defined networking powered by VellOS will bring these features to other applications in addition to storage replication."
Vello Systems is a privately held Silicon Valley company pioneering in the emerging field of software-defined networking by building networks controlled by a powerful network operating system, VellOS, to simplify connectivity of compute and storage resources within and between data centers. Vello delivers solutions for latency sensitive applications for data center networking including market data content delivery, storage replication and big data connections.
