VRT Uses NetMix Pro To Search For Sound EffectsBelgian broadcaster relies on sound library management system for cross-platform workflow (May 26, 2005)
Creative Network Design (CND), a leading sound and audio software developer, today announced that VRT (Vlaamse Radio-en Televisieomroep), one of the leading radio and television broadcast facilities in Belgium, has selected NetMix Pro, the industrys leading sound library management system, to optimize the broadcasters workflow for searching and auditioning sound effects. The NetMix Pro solution is used across the VRT network, on both PC and Macintosh workstations.
VRT implemented NetMix Pro in January, 2005 across a six Digidesign Pro Tools HD workstation environment. All of VRTs sound effects assets are stored on a server, which is built on Macintosh XServe G5 with a JetStore RAID system of 6.4 terabytes (TB). The facility also has a network of Avid and Unity workstation clients that currently number eleven, with further installations in the near future.
?People used to give up their coffee breaks to search for specific sounds. Now, they just use NetMix Pro and click the mouse and they can find twenty sounds which could be used for the program theyre editing, said Siegfried Rossaerts, VRT sonos application engineer for summarization. ?Before we installed NetMix Pro, you had to look up sounds in a vast library of CDs. Now, the process is instantaneous. This is a major difference for our sound editors and sound designers.
With nearly continuous use of VRTs Avid and Unity systems, and tremendous demand for the broadcasters network resources, NetMix Pro enables editors and producers to quickly search, audition, and capture sounds from the network server without straining the overall bandwidth of the system. NetMix Pro works on both Mac and PC environments and enables audio editors, using any system, to search, audition, transfer and manage audio assets with unprecedented ease. NetMix Pro 3.3, recently introduced at NAB 2005, enables spot-to-timeline features for Digidesign Pro Tools 6.9 XP users.
?The installation of NetMix Pro at VRT is an ideal example of how professional broadcast facilities can centralize their digital assets through any environment and still manage to provide easy access to material, said Markus Schmidt , founder and CEO of Creative Network Design. ?The intricacy of VRTs daily needs, with sound and video editors accessing similar files simultaneously from the central server, provides an excellent test of NetMix Pros ability to serve an on-demand workflow solution for a creative team that works virtually around the clock.
Says Rossaert, ?We have several popular crime series that are running on VRT now, and the editors for these shows use NetMix Pro all the time. I had the server on which NetMix Pro was installed running continuously for four months before I shut it down last week for maintenance. Almost immediately, I received complaints from various editors that they couldnt use NetMix, their lifeblood product. They literally couldnt do their work without it.
?We can handle NetMix Pro the way we want. Other systems are closed whereas, with NetMix Pro, if I want to expand storage, its not a problem. Similarly, I can expand with both Mac and PC platforms, continued Rossaert. ?The manipulation of other databases which can be implemented is also a key consideration for VRT. We can adapt our database for metadata creation, as well. We recently ripped about 500 music CDs in the last two weeks. Through NetMix Pro, our mixers and sound designers have access to about 65,000 sound effects. Thats quite a lot of material from which to work. If they want to find a specific dog or bird sound, NetMix Pro serves them about twenty to thirty choices. We will also add the music libraries to the server as well.
