VIRTOOLS wins the European IST Grand Prize, Worth 200 000 Euros3D interactive authoring tool one of only three grand prize winners (January 04, 2002)
The Grand Prizes - each worth 200 000 Euros - were presented by Erkki Liikanen, the European Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society, at Information Society Technologies 2001 event (IST 2001), held in Düsseldorf from December 3-5.
The European IST Prize (EISTP) is an award for groundbreaking products that represent the best of European innovation in information technology. It provides public recognition and a highly visible profile to entrepreneurial teams that excel in generating and converting novel ideas and R&D into marketable products. The Prize is organised by Euro-CASE with the support of the European Commission's Information Society Technologies (IST) research programme.
The 20 winners of the EISTP were announced last September and exhibited at IST 2001, a three day conference and exhibition covering the strategic issues of Information Society policy, regulation and technology in Europe (see Annex). They come from Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, and were selected from almost 300 submissions by a jury of European experts formed by Euro-CASE, the European Council of Applied Sciences and Engineering.
At a ceremony on December 3, three of them were awarded the ?200 000 Grand Prize by Commissionner Liikanen, Edelgard Bulmahn (Federal Minister of Education and Research, Germany) and Thierry Breton, Chairman and CEO of Thomson Multimedia and Chairman of the Euro-CASE Executive Jury for the EISTP.
