Update: Quark Previews QuarkXPress 6

Next-generation page layout software drops Mac OS 9 support, moves to Mac OS X By Dave Nagel
Earlier today we reported that Quark had begun previewing the next generation of its flagship page layout application, QuarkXPress 6. As reported, QuarkXPress 6 will support Mac OS X, and it will also receive other workflow and feature enhancements. But the company has since provided us with further details on the software and plans for QuarkXPress 5.x.

When QuarkXPress 5 was released for Mac OS 9, Quark said that an update to version 5 would provide support for Mac OS X. According to a representative from Quark, this is no longer the case. QuarkXPress 5.x will run only on Mac OS 9 and in the Classic environment in Mac OS X. So QuarkXPress 6 will be the first native Mac OS X release.

In addition, QuarkXPress 6 will no longer support operating systems prior to Mac OS X. It will run on Mac OS X natively only on the Mac platform and Windows 2000 and XP and the Windows platform.

We also asked Quark about plans for the migration of XTensions to the new platform. The company informed us that third-party developers have had access to the QuarkXPress XDK (XTension Development Kit) "for several months" and that "many of the top XTension developers are already developing XTensions modules for QuarkXPress 6." The Quark representative went on to say, "Current XTensions modules will not function with QuarkXPress 6 as a result of the port to Mac OS X."

In addition to Mac OS X support, QuarkXPress 6 will also offer several workflow enhancements. These include a reorganization of menus, more commands available in contextual menus and support for multiple undo/redo and additional actions that can be undone and redone.

Quark has not announced pricing or availability for QuarkXPress 6, though the company says it will continue to provide further previews of the new version over the coming weeks on its Web site. We'll continue to provide updates as they become available. For more information, visit
