Update: Apple Debuts Logic 6, Logic Express 6

New audio software coming in March By Dave Nagel
Apple today released further details of its audio product line for 2004. The lineup, as first seen last night, consolidates all of the existing Logic products into two new audio suites: Logic Pro 6 and Logic Express 6. The new applications are expected to ship in March.

Logic Pro 6 is being positioned as a "studio in a box" and includes Logic Platinum and 53 DSP plugins and software instruments. Logic Platinum is Emagic's flagship audio production system. It offers MIDI and audio editing capabilities, as well as film and sync features. It includes 32-bit signal processing, a surround sound digital mixer (up to 7.1 channels), sample-accurate automation and more than 50 effects plugins. It also provides integration features for DigiDesign Pro Tools and supports sample rates up to 192 kHz at 24 bits.

As previously reported, the company also previewed new, individual audio technologies, including Guitar Amp, a guitar amplifier simulator that provides controls over the type of amp, speakers, microphone placement and other parameters; Sculpture, which is a component-modeling-based synthesis environment offering a number of interactive controls for creating experimental sounds, with deformers and various tonal and behavioral adjustment parameters; and UltraBeat, a percussion synthesizer that offers up to 25 drum voices, a step sequencer and various types of synthesis, including FM, subtractive, sample-based and component modeling. Apple says these are not a part of the Logic software that will debut in March but are instead going to be incorporated into future software products, as yet unannounced.

Logic Express 6 is a streamlined version of Logic Pro, offering support for up to 48 audio tracks, 12 input channels and sample rates up to 96 kHz. It also includes 28 effects plugins and software instruments.

Logic Pro 6 and Logic Express 6 are expected to ship in March for Mac OS X for $999 and $299, respectively. The new applications and technologies are being shown off throughout the week at the NAMM convention being held in Anaheim, Calif. For more information, visit
