Up in Smoke

Adding a new twist to logo treatment By Stephen Schleicher
As a motion graphic artist, you probably been approached by a company looking to have their logo animated for video and film work. There are literally hundreds of ways to approach this task. In this After Effects Production Bundle exercise, well use fractal noise and ramp effects, along with a Track Matte to make the companys logo go up in smoke.

Well begin by taking a look at the company logo for this exercise. Nagelgruppe GmbH is a small film company that would like to have their logo (below) used at the beginning of all of their feature presentations.

For their intro, the client would like to have the logo to begin as a solid green color and then appear to become smoky and fade out of the frame.

Open Adobe After Effects and create a New Composition by pressing Command+N on the Mac or Control+N on the PC. Name the composition Smoke, and set the width to 720 pixels and the height to 980 pixels. Set the duration for this composition to six seconds.

Create a New Solid by pressing Command+Y on the Mac or Control+Y on the PC. Name the solid Ramp Layer. Make the layer the same size as the composition by pressing the Make Comp Size button. The color doesnt matter right now, so press OK.

From the Effect menu select Render>Ramp and apply it to the Ramp Layer.

In the Effect Controls Panel, move the Start of Ramp to 360, 0 and the End of Ramp to 360, 500. Change the Start Color to a bright green (0, 255, 0) and the End Color to black (0, 0, 0). Make sure the Ramp Shape is set to Linear. This creates a gradient that starts completely green at the top of the screen and gradually fades to black.
