Univision's KBTQ-FM Chooses Axia IP-Audio NetworkingBuilds new studios with Livewire technology (December 15, 2004)
Univision's KBTQ-FM, "The Beat," is the latest radio station to install new studios using Axia IP-Audio networking for studio interconnection and routing. One of three stations in Univision's McAllen, Texas cluster, "The Beat" is the #1-rated CHR station in McAllen/Brownsville, a market ranked #62 in the latest Arbitron survey thanks to its listener base of more than 750,000 people.
KBTQ, a 100,000-watt FM, installed an Axia network after deciding to upgrade from their studios' heritage analog equipment. Having evaluated several router/mixer systems, Jorge Garza, Univision's Market Chief Engineer, chose Axia because of the system's flexibility, low cost and expansion capabilities.
"Axia is not pricey like some of the other systems," Garza says. "And it's so much easier to interface studio devices using an Ethernet switch, routing all my audio through just one cable, than it is to do it using with standard cabling."
"Axia's use of standard, switched Ethernet as an audio network backbone makes it possible for broadcasters to have all the capabilities of a proprietary mainframe-type router, at about half the cost," commented Axia President Michael "Catfish" Dosch. "Now you don't have to have the budget of a Top 10 market station to have the advantage of sharing and routing audio."
Axia is the world's first audio network designed specifically for broadcast studios. Using patent-pending Livewire technology, Axia networks transport real-time, "live" audio, plus Program Associated Data (PAD) and machine remote control over Ethernet. Livewire also eliminates audio cards by allowing PCs to send digital audio to network destinations through their Ethernet NICs.
Univision's Garza sums up his Axia experience with this: "Axia is everything that I thought it would be," he says. "I like it so much, I'm getting a quote to do the rest of my studios!"
Axia, a Telos company, builds Ethernet-based professional IP-Audio products for broadcast, production, sound-reinforcement and commercial applications. Products include digital audio routing switchers, DSP mixers and processors and software for configuring, managing, and interfacing IP-Audio systems.
