University of Connecticut Adopts the iclicker2 Classroom Response System

(September 07, 2011)

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 09/07/11 -- Beginning this fall semester, University of Connecticut (UConn) will adopt Macmillan New Venture's iclicker2 as the classroom response system endorsed by the University and supported by its Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL). iclicker2 was chosen as the best fit for UConn's students and instructors due to its simplicity to learn and use and for its compatibility with both PC and Mac platforms.

In 2006, UConn chose its first clicker vendor to provide hardware, software, training and support for students and instructors. But as technology changed, so did the needs of students and instructors. This year, an ITL committee evaluated six classroom response system vendors before selecting iclicker2 for UConn.

According to Steve McDermott, educational media associate at UConn, "I put together a committee of technical staff and, most importantly, instructors who are heavy users of classroom response system technology. The committee chose iclicker2 for a number of reasons, not the least of which was its simplicity. Our faculty have so much to do and spending time learning a new technology is just not productive. They can learn iclicker in minutes. And, for those professors that want to offer more than multiple-choice questions, iclicker2 gives them the option of numeric, alphanumeric and text responses. But for those who want to keep it simple, they can."

"We are proud to be selected by UConn as their campus standard," said Troy Williams, vice president of Macmillan and general manager of Macmillan New Ventures, the division that includes iclicker. "We have worked hard to make sure that iclicker2 maintains iclicker's simple, easy-to-use interface while ensuring that new features are based in pedagogically sound strategies that were at the core of iclicker's educator-inventors' original vision for the product."

McDermott continued, "A huge advantage of iclicker2 is that it works from the first day of class with no need for students to register before they walk into class and begin using it. Polling and data collection can begin immediately. And, our technicians like the fact that iclicker2 software runs off of the iclicker USB drive via an executable file. There is no need for installation and updates of software on our tech classroom PCs. That way all class rosters and polling data stay with the instructor."

About iclicker:
iclicker was built by educators for educators with the goal of keeping students focused on content, not technology. iclicker is one of the most widely used classroom response systems in higher education, adopted at more than 1000 educational institutions in North America and Canada and used by more than 2.5 million students. iclicker has a growing number of customers in K-12 and also serves customers in corporate environments. Invented in 2003 by four University of Illinois professors, iclicker's classroom response system continues to be recognized for its superior reliability, intuitive software, and focus on formative assessment and pedagogy. Together with a team of faculty advisors and reviewers, inventors Tim Stelzer and Mats Selen continue to play lead roles in product development. iclicker is a product of Macmillan New Ventures, a division of Macmillan.
