Union Editorial Cuts "Aerow-Dynamic" For Nike

Einar edits online short directed by Trio Film's William Bindley (August 18, 2004)

Union Editorial has just completed editing "Aerow-dynamic," a 90-second online short film that simultaneously introduces the new Total 90 Aerow soccer ball while promoting "Skill Squad," Nike's goodwill soccer team aimed at outreach to at-risk youth. Produced via Los Angeles's trio films, the William Bindley-directed short tells the story of a young boy who finds himself enlisted by a member of the Skill Squad to play in a stadium-packed match. "Aerow-dynamic" is one of several promotional films featured at

Nike commissioned several directors and production companies to develop short films for screening as part of a month-long Nike installation in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse. The players featured in "Aerow-dynamic" are from Nike Los Angeles's Skill Squad, who with Nike's help, hold open training sessions at Ross Snyder Recreation Center in South Central Los Angeles

Said trio films producer Tim Johnson, "Bindley shot the film partially in 35mm, and partially in HD, so Einar and Union Editorial had quite a big job. We were also working under incredibly tight turnarounds, and were very impressed with Einar's focus. We have a great relationship with Union - and were pleased to have access to top level talent in all areas of post, with Todd Iorio contributing effects and Matt Lewkowicz providing the audio mix on 'Aero-dynamic.'"

"Aerow-dynamic" opens in a bowling alley, as a mullet-haired player smugly celebrates his strike. In the next lane, a dreadlocked man walks casually up to the ball dispenser, unzips a black bag emblazoned with the Nike logo, and takes out the new Total 90 Aerow soccer ball. All eyes are on him as he punts the ball for a perfect pin-shattering strike. A young bystander picks up the ball as it exits the dispenser. The spot cuts to the boy and player as they dribble and drive the ball through the Los Angeles urban landscape. At each new location, they are joined by additional ball players. Soon, an impromptu team of men and women, adults and children, march into a crowded stadium. Meeting them on the field is an imposing opposition team, and soon the game begins, all set to an electronic Latin soundtrack. The young boy is the game's hero, as he scores the winning goal to thunderous applause.

Said Einar, himself a huge soccer fan, "William Bindley shot an incredible amount of scenes, practically keeping the camera rolling continuously. He gathered tons of great footage, but inevitably, that made my job all the more challenging. It was great fun however, to time the soccer moves to the music, which was the running theme throughout the spot."
