Unexplained dolphin strandings continue in Mass.

Long days, tough decisions, weary crews as unexplained stranding of dolphins continue in Mass. By The Associated Press

WELLFLEET, Mass (AP) ' The dolphin beachings on Cape Cod are continuing at a baffling and unprecedented pace.

After 11 dolphins were stranded Monday, the total for the last month is 177 ' five times what researchers typically see in a year. So far, 124 have died.

No one can explain the strandings, though researchers are trying.

Meanwhile, the pace is wearing out rescue teams at the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Team manager Katie Moore says no one knows when it's going to end, and that can be exhausting.

She's been encouraged by IFAW's success so far in getting 53 of the dolphins back to sea. She also believes in the work, saying humans have such a big effect on the ocean, they need to help the dolphins when they can.
