Uncertainty after ruling in NY school worship caseChurches, just evicted, deal with injunction that once again allows worship in NYC schools
NEW YORK (AP) ' Religious congregations are scrambling to deal with an 11th-hour injunction that allows them to continue worshipping in New York City schools.
The congregations, mostly small Christian churches, had been ordered out after last Sunday. The city had won a ruling based on separation of church and state.
But a federal judge granted a temporary injunction on Thursday and some churches were making plans to move back into the schools. Others complained about the red tape involved and the uncertainty that the injunction would hold, since the city has appealed.
A bill pending in the state Legislature adds to the confusion.
One pastor compared the situation to a roller coaster. Another said it was impossible to move a church one week and move it back the next.
