Umax Ships Astra 4450

USB model sports transparency adapter By Dave Nagel
Umax has started shipping its new Astra 4450 scanner. The company says the scanner is targeted toward small offices and home offices, but it offers 48-bit color, 1,200 x 2,400 DPI resolution and a built-in transparency adapter. The new USB model sells for $129.

The 4450 is similar to the Umax Astra 4400, which was announced in July, in that it offers consumer-friendly features like push-button scanning and direct scanning for fax or e-mail. The bonus is the transparency adapter, which supports slides and negatives up to 4 inches x 5 inches.

It comes bundled with ABBYY FineReader 4.0 Sprint OCR software and MGI's PhotoSuite III SE image editing software. The UMAX Copy Utility turns the scanner into a color or black and white copy machine, while UMAX VistaScan provides a TWAIN-compliant interface with a PC. The new model only supports Windows.
