Ubercaster makes podcasting simple

By David Basulto

At this years Macworld, one of the booths I knew I wanted to visit was Pleasant Software. The German company had a product that was a must see for me. As a podcaster I have longed for something easy to use and powerful. I was tired of using Garageband and sick of deleting the gigantic files it would save.

I had a chance to sit with Sebastian Clauss, the interface designer of Ubercaster. I immediately fell in love with the product. It was one of those ?where have you been all my life moments.

What is Ubercaster?
Ubercaster is a software application for the Mac that was made with the podcaster in mind. It is simple to use and really molds to your original work flow. Ubercaster has four modes: Prepare, Record, Cut, and Release. All are extremely easy to master and have powerful tools.

Like to record your show, then add music or intros and outros after? Simply press the record button, wait for the countdown to finish (3,2,1) and record your audio. When completed you can drag any audio files from your desktop into the user interface and position it appropriately in the Cut area.

Oops made a mistake? Coughed during the show? No problem. Add a marker where you did the cough. Then in the Cut area, set an in point where your marker is and go back to the Record mode. Record your new audio. It will be a perfect fit. This is also a great option for those who may have forgotten some key points in their show and instead of re-recording you can just insert the new audio right where you want it. Nice stuff.

A Recording Studio
Using Ubercaster makes you feel like you have your own recording studio and radio show. Just hit the record button and start your show. If you want to add music or a sound bite while youre talking just hit a hotkey you have setup for that track or click on the track with your mouse and the audio will now be live in your show, real time.

For those who want to use Skype to record an interview, Ubercaster has you covered there too. Again go about your show then hit the button you have for a Skype call and it will be recorded live in the user interface. This also works for iChat, Gizmo and other chat applications. As a Skype user I love this feature. I can have folks call into the show and add them live.

Ubercasters delivery mode has all you need to add powerful meta data for your show. You can add cover art, titles, and show notes with ease. If you have ever wanted to turn your show into an enhanced podcast, Ubercaster takes you there with ease. Enhanced podcasts are great for adding chapters, photos and links. This is especially great if you are discussing products and want to have a hot link to a buy now page.

One you have finished with meta data, Ubercaster encodes the show and saves it in your file. Another great feature you can avail of  is letting Ubercaster upload your show to your server or host via FTP settings. This is really a one stop shop program.

Final Thoughts
Ubercaster is a powerful and effective choice for anyone who is podcasting or has wanted to create any type of audio content. The entire product is intuitive and extremely easy to master. Ubercaster runs just under $80 but is worth every penny. I have done two shows with it and always find myself saying ?where have you been all my life to the screen. I think its time to leave the garage. For more info visit
