UVPHACTORY Packages Outside Mag's Ultimate Top 10 for OLN
For the Outdoor Life Network (Stamford, CT) the broadcast design experts at New York-based UVPHACTORY designed and produced visually dynamic promotion and program packages - including logo, open, lower thirds, ?Top-Ten countdown graphics, graphic transitions, bumpers, animating logo bugs, wipes, and credit squeeze - for the networks new weekly series, Outside Magazines Ultimate Top Ten. The on-air promotional toolbox and the series, which counts down the best of adventure athletes and their playgrounds, began airing nationally July 3, 2004 following coverage of the Tour de France.
Ultimate Top Ten is the ultimate guide and crib sheet for heart-stopping adventure. From topics like Adrenaline-Pumping Sports to The Bad Boys of the Outdoors, Outside Magazine's Ultimate Top Ten taps into the viewer's thirst for the next great outdoor high.
Brian Welsh, UVPHACTORY Senior Producer explained, ?OLN gave us a great deal of creative freedom. We collaborated with OLN on a deliverables list to create the 10 opens and the toolkit. OLN has expanded upon their field and stream roots into things like cycling, the Gravity Games and surfing. Outside Magazines Ultimate Top-Ten is edgy and fast paced and we wanted our visuals to mirror the energy and excitement of the series.
OLN was intent on not losing the punch, the energy of each footage clip, but they also wanted vibrant graphic beds so UVPHACTORYS challenge was to balance the two and not allow the footage to recede into the background or be overpowered by the graphics. ?I think we created an effective synergy between the two elements, Jake Slutsky, UVPHACTORY Senior Designer/Animator said. ?We tried to keep the images powerful and to utilize interesting transitions between the different sports. We achieved this by isolating motion commonalities between images, or colors, or textural elements. For example, the water bed of a guy kayaking might transition into the clouds behind a skydiver, or a surfers wave or wake, which wipes the screen, might transition into the dirt kicked up by a Motocross biker. We also employed arrows which are represented graphically and act as wipes and transitions between different footage clips and the stark contrasts in colors. These also provided a bit of depth as the device helped separate the layers.
?This was the first high-energy countdown series OLN had produced and we wanted to go all out on the look," added Michael Magnotta, Vice President/Creative Director of OLN. ?Our goal was to draw a younger audience, so the opens, the program and promotional elements all had to have a dynamic appeal to keep up with the quick pace of the show. The package also needed to be flexible and energized so that it would never get boring. UVPHACTORY delivered on all these expectations. The graphics compliment rather than overpower and the elements make the series look really sharp on air.
The UVPHACTORY creative team included Executive Creative Director Scott Sindorf; Technical Director Damijan Saccio; Art Director/Creative Director Alexandre Moors; Senior Producer Brian Welsh; Senior Designer/Animator Jake Slutsky; Designers/Animators Mark Thompson, Bashir Hamid and Craig Hubbard; Designer Brad Marks; and Editor Damien Baskette.
UVPHACTORY utilized Softimage XSI 4.0 Beta, Adobe After Effects 6.5, Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Illustrator CS and Apple Final Cut Pro 4.5 in the completion of this project. (There was no additional editorial, post, color correction and no music, sound design or audio post on this assignment.)
