US town welcomes back China's next president

US farm town welcomes back China's next president, more than 25 years after previous visit By The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ' The last time China's soon-to-be leader visited Iowa, he slept in a bedroom with green shag carpeting and Star Trek character cutouts on the walls.

But apparently Xi Jinping remembered the 1985 stay fondly because he insisted on returning to the small farming community of Muscatine to reunite with his hosts. Back then, he was just a young Communist Party leader trying to learn more about American farming practices to help his agriculture-rich region of northern China.

Now he's China's vice president, and he's expected to ascend to the nation's highest office next year.

Xi spent Tuesday in Washington. When he gets to Iowa on Wednesday, he'll be joined by about 16 people for tea and champagne.
